A Memorial Service for George S. Cherekos of Baudette, MN was held on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 10:30AM at First Lutheran Church in Baudette, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

George Cherekos passed away on June 5, 2014. George will be forever remembered for his easy going and optimistic viewpoint toward life.

George’s beginning started on August 26, 1928 in Springfield, Illinois. George’s father, Steve, was a Greek immigrant that came through Ellis Island at age 14. George’s mother, Helen, was a German immigrant. George completed elementary school and high school in Springfield before moving on to college at the St Louis College of Pharmacy in St Louis Missouri.

Following college, George was able to travel extensively in South America while working for Abbott Labs and later worked for a smaller pharmaceutical firm, Arner-Stone Laboratories, in Mount Prospect, Illinois. In September of 1972, George moved his family to Baudette and worked for the next 21 years at Rowell Laboratories, retiring in 1993.

George loved the Baudette area and his favorite pastimes became fishing and golfing. George loved spending time fishing on Lake of the Woods in the islands outside of Morson, Ontario. George’s wife, Marilyn, was his favorite fishing partner and together they enjoyed the camaraderie of fishing with each other while enjoying all the beauty that Lake of the Woods has to offer. George and Marilyn were married for 59 years and together explored life as loving companions in the Baudette area as well as many wonderful trips abroad. George will be deeply missed by his whole family but we all understand that his passing starts a new, glorious life in Heaven.

George is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Ziegler); children Jean Hayes (Bill) of Madison WI, Julie Kuehn (Doug) of Plymouth, MN, Chris (Susan) of Yorkville, IL, Chuck (Linda) of Plymouth, MN, and Gayle Weber of Chesterfield, MO. His grandchildren include Justin and Nick Hayes (Jean and Bill), Jessica Henderson and Josie Kuehn (Julie and Doug Kuehn), Cassie Peterson (Chris and Susan Cherekos), Steve and Nick Cherekos (Chuck and Linda Cherekos) and Christopher, Timothy, and Kimberly Weber (Gayle Weber). The family would like to acknowledge the excellent, passionate and loving care he received in his final days at Lakewood Health Center as well as the spiritual guidance provided by Pastor Steve Bovendam of First Lutheran Church of Baudette.
