Trailing by 13 points against 17-4 Norman County West, things didn’t look good for the Climax-Fisher girls basketball team.
But the Knights kept playing hard and good things quickly followed. Behind the guard play of McKenzie Bruer and Kaia Korynta, the Knights pulled off a stunning upset of Norman County West.
Bruer and Korynta each scored 18 points to lead the Knights to a 65-61 victory Thursday evening.
NCW beat the Knights by 11 the first time the two teams met this season.
This time the Knights dominated the final 12 minutes of the game to earn the win.
Bruer and Korynta took advantage of a NCW’s 2-3 zone, used to stop leading scorer Meredith Egeland.
The move helped NCW contain Egeland, who scored 11 points. But it also opened up the outside for the Knights’ guards.
The two earned steals, made lay-ups and hit the outside shot. Bruer sealed the win with a 6-of-7 performance from the free throw line.
“Our girls proved they aren’t ready to pack it in for the season,” Knights head coach Mike Kasowski said.
The Knights, 13-10 on the season, end their regular season schedule this week with games against Ada-Borup and Norman County East.
They will most likely get the sixth seed when they open the playoffs next Thursday. Details of the playoffs will be announced later this week.
