Homestead Notice

Important Property Tax Homestead Notice
You must contact your county assessor to file a homestead application on or before December 15, 2007, if one of the following applies:
• You are a property owner or qualifying relative of the property owner and you have changed residences during the past year and are using the property for homestead purposes; or
• You are a property owner or qualifying relative of the property owner and the use of the property has changed during the past year: You are now using the property for homestead purposes, and the property was not receiving the homestead classification in the past.
A qualifying relative for homestead purposes depends on the type of property. For residential property, a qualifying relative can be a parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew or niece of the owner. This relationship may be blood or by marriage. For agricultural property, a qualifying relative can be a child, grandchild or parent of the owner or a child or grandchild of the spouse of the owner.
Once you have been granted the homestead classification the county assessor will automatically send an application form out to the qualifying occupant of the property at the beginning of each year.
If you should sell, move, or for any reason no longer qualify for the homestead classification, you are required to notify the county assessor within 30 days of the change in homestead status. Failure to notify the county assessor within this 30-day period is punishable by recalculation of tax as non-homestead, in addition to a penalty equal to 100 percent of the homestead benefits.
