Mail ballots for primary will be sent out by Aug. 19

Only three Kittson County voter precincts will actually see voters visiting the polls in Minnesota’s Primary Election on Tuesday, September 9. Everyone else in the county will be voting by mail.
The cities of Hallock and Karlstad must have a polling place and Springbrook Township, although eligible to participate in mail ballot voting, has elected to continue voting the “old fashioned” way, with a polling place, judges and election day voting hours. Precincts with 400 or less registered voters are eligible to participate in the mail ballot process.
Aside from these three precincts, registered voters residing in the cities of Donaldson, Halma, Humboldt, Kennedy, Lake Bronson and Lancaster will cast their ballots by mail, as will those in all remaining townships within Kittson County.
The County Auditor-Treasurer will mail ballots to all persons who are registered to vote by August 19. Eligible voters who are not registered by the mailing deadline may apply for an absentee ballot at the County Auditor’s Office and vote.
Persons who were eligible to vote in the last election, but are no longer a resident of any of the townships or cities cannot use the mail ballot and must reregister.
There will be no county offices listed on the Primary Ballot. Only incumbents have filed for the positions open for election this year, and there are very few positions open. Three County Commissioners and three Soil & Water District Supervisors are up for election.
Craig Spilde, incumbent commissioner in District #1, John Wayne Anderson of District #2 and Leon Olson of District #4 have all filed for reelection uncontested.
In the Soil & Water Districts, Greg Peterson filed for reelection in District #1, Scott Klein in District #2, and Joe Wilebski is seeking reelection in District #5. All are uncontested.
For the first time residents were allowed to file for state office elections in their home counties, and Kittson County had one such filing with J. C. Carlson seeking election to the seat of the District 1A House of Representatives. Mr. Carlson filed as a candidate of the Independence Party.
On the State partisan Primary ballot there are seven persons seeking votes from the Independence Party for the U. S. Senate. They are, Kurt Michael Anderson, Dean Barkley, Bill Dahl, Darryl Stanton, Jack Uldrich, Stephen Williams and Doug Williams.
For U. S. Senate from the Republican side are incumbent Norm Coleman and Jack Shepard. Democrats seeking votes in the primary for the same office are Alve Erickson, Priscilla Lord Faris, Rob Fitzgerald, Al Franken, “Dick” Franson, Bob Larson and Ole Savior.
Republicans looking to get on the general election ballot for U. S. Representative District 7 are Glen Memze and Alan Roebke. Democrat incumbent Collin Peterson received no challenge from his fellow Democrats.
