Got a good chili recipe? Enter the chili cookoff
How do you like your chili?Do you like it hot, hot, hot, or maybe just a little pepper heat. Or maybe you like it mild. Some people like white chili, some like red, others like it loaded with beans and still others don’t want to see any beans at all in their bowl of chili.
However you like it, you’ll probably find just what you are looking for at the Moose fest Chili Cookoff at noon on Saturday.
The event was added to the agenda of Moose Fest activities last year, according to George Hultgren, who oversees the contest, and was a big enough hit to bring it back for another round of taste-bud-blistering again this year.
George estimated there were probably 11 entries last year and has made accommodations for up to 25 initially for this year’s competition.
“We can handle more if we need to,” Hultgren said. “It’s just a matter of getting some more tables so we have some place to put the added crock pots.”
The rules are simple, just bring a crockpot full of chili and give it to George or his assistant Ardis Hanson at the picnic shelter in Moose Park located near the tennis courts. They will set it up, plug it in to their generator and place the cups and spoons on the table for tasting.
The winner is determined by a popular vote. As visitors pass through the area, they are given a ticket to place in the box of their favorite chili concoction. The tasting continues until 2 p.m., then the votes are counted and the crockpot with the most tickets in the box is declared the winner.
This year the winner will receive a prize of 25 dollars in Karlstad Bucks along with a six quart crockpot that George donated to the event.
And as a precaution to those tasters who are not of the cast iron stomach class, the Karlstad Girl Scouts will be selling bottles of water at the event to cool and fires that may erupt.
