Alice Rokke

Alice Rokke, 98, of Newfolden, MN died on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Warren, MN.
Alice Ruby Horgen was born to Alfred and Anetta Horgen on the family farm in McCrea township of rural Warren on December 15, 1909. She was baptized and confirmed at the McCrea Lutheran Church. She attended school at the rural Horgen school and at the North Star College in Warren. She worked as a nurses aid at the Bethesda Invalid Home in St. Paul until she married. Alice married Arnold Rokke of Newfolden at her parent’s home on December 31, 1936. Arnold and Alice had five children: Anita Martha, Marilyn Alice, Naomi Karen, Marjory Jean and John Arnold. Alice was a longtime organist at church. She began playing at the McCrea Lutheran Church, Warren, and continued at the Bethania Lutheran Church, Newfolden, for over 50 years. She was a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She was also very active in Ladies Aid, Homemakers Club and 4-H leader. She worked as bookkeeper at the Co-op in Newfolden as well as working on the farm. Alice had many hobbies that included music, sewing, baking, canning, working in flower and vegetable gardens, crocheting and most any craft that her kids brought home.
Preceded in death by husband, Arnold, in 1986; infant daughter, Marjory, in 1947; parents, 12 sisters and brothers and sisters and brothers-in-law.
Survived by children: Anita (Adrian) Duske of Waverly, MN, Marilyn (Dennis) Gray of Newfolden, Naomi (Dennis) Winkelmann of Fosston, MN, John (Denise) Rokke of Waseca, MN; 11 grandchildren: Marjorie Duske, Michelle (Pat) Heuer, Melanie Duske, Ben (Rachel) Duske, Craig (Paula) Gray, Michael (Beth) Gray, Timothy Gray, Katrin Winkelmann, Dulcie Winkelmann, Brendan Rokke and Kristen Rokke; 10 great grandchildren: Meghan Williams, Jessica and Nate Heuer, Hannah Gray, Mariah and Olivia Gray, Lucas and Rachel Gray and Jakob and Leo Duske. She is also survived by a sister: Lola Hedlund of Warren; and sisters-in-law: Ebba Horgen of Owatonna and Junice Horgen of Warren; as well as many nieces and nephews and family friends.

Funeral service was at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, at Bethania Free Lutheran Church, rural Newfolden, with Reverend Philip Rokke officiating. Organist was Orpha Schaffhauser; special music was by Eunice Liedberg and Eunice Grothe and also Eunice Waterworth. Pallbearers were Marjorie Duske, Craig Gray, Michael Gray, Michelle Heuer, Melanie Duske, Timothy Gray, Katrin Winkelmann, Dulcie Winkelmann, Brendan Rokke, Ben Duske and Kristen Rokke. Honorary bearers were Orpha Schaffhauser, Jeff Bring, Sharon Bring, Rodney Liedberg, Jerry Hanson, Brian Rokke, Bill Wagner and Irwin Underbakke. Burial was in Bethania Cemetery, rural Newfolden.
Johnson Funeral Service of Thief River Falls was in charge of arrangements.
