Track team is very young this year

Track Coach Aaron Johnson
Seniors will be scarce on this year’s Northern Freeze track teams. Among the three schools involved, Tri-County, MCC and BGMR, only two senior boys are returning and one senior girl.
The upside of that is that all three tracksters advanced to the Section meet last year.
Pole vaulter Matthew Levenhagen will be returning to that event. Matt did advance last year, but due to a commitment to the military, he was in basic training at the time the meet was held and missed out on the event.
Track Coach Aaron Johnson said that levenhagen had a pretty good chance to qualify for a state trip last year.
“He was one the top five pole vaulters in Section 8,” he said. “He should do well this year.”
Derek Stusynski, who qualified in the 110 and 300 hurdles last year will also be back, as will Melissa Blawat. Melissa ran the 800 meters last year and advanced in the 4X800 relay. All of Blawat’s teammates on the relay team, however, have graduated.
“We have sixteen boys and sixteen girls, only three are seniors, so we are a pretty young squad this year,” Johnson said.
Varsity experience will be rare indeed. There are also only two junior boys and four junior girls on this team as well. But Coach Johnson just sees that as the inevitable building year for his team.
“We have a lot of freshman,’ he said. “We are not sure what they will compete in. Some kids did very well in Jr High last year. A lot of them will be getting a lot of learning experience this year.”
The team’s first meet is next week at Northland Community Technical College (NCTC) in Thief River Falls on Tuesday, April 15. It is an invitational meet and Johnson is not sure how many teams will be there. He said with the recent snow storm to our south, he does expect to see quite a few teams at this one because their own facilities may not be quite ready.
Also coaching track this year are Nick Amb of Tri-County, Laura Strand and Dawn Ellis of BGMR, and Kent Warne of MCC.
