Twins attract local baseball hopefuls

John Oistad, local orgaqnizer for the Minnesota Twins Baseball Clinic held at Karlstad last Friday, and Ken Mauer talk over the day’s activities over a pop and a hot dog during the clinic. John has been instrumental in bringing the clinic to Karlstad seven times over the past few years. That is quite a feat since two years in one place, generally the limit for these clinics. John says the Twins like to come here because the clinic brings a good turnout of kids from a very wide area.

A little rain fell, but the really stormy weather stayed away until the Twins Clinic was done at Karlstad on Friday, June 27.
The clinic started at 2 p.m. at the John Oistad Field.
Kids age 6-9 were the first group, then at 3:30, ages 10-16 went down onto the field.
The coaches who came to run the clinic this year were; Ken Mauer, Dick Mingo, and Kevin Nunn. Mauer and Mingo have been here many times before and this was the second year for Kevin Nunn.
One of the reasons the Twins like coming to Karlstad is because of the number of kids who turn out. This time there were an estimated 86 kids who showed and each left with a wealth of valuable baseball training.
The kids learned how to pitch, hit, and field. Each coach has their own station.
Coaches split up the kids into two groups. One half went to Kevin Nunn, who taught the kids how to field, and the other half went to Dick Mingo to learn how to pitch.
Then after fifteen to thirty minutes, the groups switched. Once they were done with Mingo and Nunn, all the kids went to Mauer for the batting lesson.
Then the rain came, but it didn’t stop the coaches or the kids. As long as there wasn’t lightning, they kept on playing. The rain did stop when it was time for the older kids to get out onto the field.
The parents could help by throwing the ball to the kids for fielding and putting the ball into the quick swing for batting.
At the end of each group, the kids were handed a Twins book, a voucher for a Twins ticket, and a T-shirt.
It worked out well for the kids who got wet to switch their T-shirts with the Twins Clinic T-shirts.
Chase Boen, Karlstad’s Summer Rec Director, helped prep the field and helped throughout the Clinic.
The Karlstad Lions worked concessions throughout the Clinic. Hot dogs and pop, everything for a dollar.
