Safety Town – Badger, MN.
The Badger Preschoolers will participate in Safety Town the week of May 5-9.
Safety Town is a realistic, child-sized town designed to provide a hands-on safety education for young children.
Safety Town is a non-profit, tax exempt, public supported organization that is designed to introduce all types of safety to children. Safety Town was first established in 1964, solely dedicated to promoting early childhood safety education and largely responsible for enlightening educators, businesses, organizations, corporations, media, government officials and the public about the importance of preschool safety education. Bill Cosby is one of the leading proponents of Safety Town.
The goal of Safety Town is to ensure the safety of our children. The Preschool staff teaches the children proper street safety. Some eye-opening statistics on road safety include:
• Children suffer a higher risk of disability or death through preventable injury than all childhood disease combined.
• Seventy percent of all fire ending in a childhood death are started by children.
• Bicycle and pedestrian accidents are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries to children.
The Badger School collaborates with the Greenbush Rescue Squad, the City of Greenbush, the City of Badger, and Northwest Community Action/Head Start to bring this educational opportunity to our Preschoolers. This is the third year of implementing Safety Town in Badger.
Safety Town is a comprehensive educational program that introduces safety awareness and preventive procedures to preschool children. The Safety Town curriculum includes all aspects of safety … strangers, poison, fire, bicycles, railroad crossings, bus, playgrounds, toys, water, traffic, child safety seats, and animals.
The program consists of an indoor classroom where children observe and participate in safety activities and an outdoor layout consisting of a miniature town complete with houses, sidewalks, crosswalks, street markings, and railroad crossings where children practice and experience simulate situations.
Preschool parents are encouraged to spend as much time as their busy schedules allow with their child at Safety Town during the week of May 5-9. Safety Town not only teaches children about safety awareness but also wants parents to be involved with their child so they can learn too.
Carpenter Avenue in front of the “old bus garage” will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. the week of May 5–9. This will allow school personnel to set up the outdoor classroom for Safety Town.
