They’re “lumbering” to Greenbush

Mavis Gonshorowski
For this young couple, packing up and moving is taking a lot more that a few days, let alone a few weeks. And, it’s taking manpower!
Once located in Deer Township, southwest of Greenbush, Shawn and Jessie Burkel are now in the process of moving their lumber business to Greenbush.
No stranger to the Greenbush area, Shawn, the son of Don and Barb Burkel, graduated from Greenbush High School in 1989.
Lumber has basically been his life since finishing his stint with the United States Army in 1996.
“Since then, lumber was all I dealt with,” he said. “I worked for Woodland Container; the home office was at Aitkin, Minnesota.”
Shawn’s job took him hopping all over the United States.
He commented, “At that point in my career my job had progressed to being pretty much on the road seven days a week.”
As for Jessie, she also has been involved with lumber for many years.
“I grew up around lumber,” she stated. “Dad had a saw mill and a lathe mill; I spent a lot of time working with wood.”
The daughter of Loretta and Wally Walz of Karlstad, Jessie is a 1985 graduate of Karlstad High School. Jessie has a grown daughter who answers to the name of Ashley.
In October of 2004, the Burkels swung open their doors of their rural business which they chose to name Custom Services.
Shawn said, “We operated a full-service retail lumber yard on the farm. It was more of a building package business. We weren’t set up for day-to-day traffic; we didn’t intend to set up for that. It just got to the point where there got to be more daily traffic. We decided this would be a good move for us.”
The new location of Custom Services is along State Highway 32 South, in the former Smith’s dance hall and the D&L Bus Lines garage.
Smith’s will house the lumber; the overflow will be in the shop situated directly behind the former dance hall.
The bus garage will provide space for the offices and displays.
Custom Services currently has 10-12 consistent suppliers.
“We handle all the basic building materials,” the Burkels commented. “Steel, windows, garage doors, siding; materials needed basically from the ground and up.”
They are also toying with the idea of adding a cabinet line, patio blocks and other outdoor accessories.
“We are looking at hiring another full-time person this summer,” Shawn stated.
Trevor Novacek and the Burkel’s nephew, Alex Burkel, part-time employees, have been kept busy during the moving process.
At one time, Trevor, a graduate of GMR School, and Alex, a Roseau High School graduate, were fierce competitors...on the wrestling mat. They are currently students at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where they both continue to be involved with wrestling.
“It’s really nice,” Shawn commented, “they’re the best of friends now.”
The target date of July 1 has been set by the Burkels to be fully organized. Somewhere down the line, they plan to host a grand opening.
We wish you continued success, Shawn and Jessie, with Custom Services. Welcome to Greenbush!!
