Local Public Health promotes Healthy behaviors for kids
Quin Community Health Services and local public health departments in Kittson, Marshall, Pennington, Red Lake and Roseau Counties will again be sponsoring a Feelin’ Fit ‘n Fine contest for children ages 3 years to sixth grade. This contest is a way of promoting healthy eating habits, physical activity and healthy behaviors. This contest will take place from June 9 to August 1, 2008.Children will receive scorecards with 16 squares and a list of qualifying activities. Each time the child completes an activity, parents or another adult initial a square and specify the activity. Once the score card is filled, students bring their scorecard into one of the pick-up locations and receive a prize. In addition, scorecards will be entered into a weekly drawing. Students are encouraged to complete as many scorecards as they like during the 8 week program. At the end of 8 weeks a grand prize will be awarded in each county.
Qualifying activities include sports, bike riding, skateboarding, dancing, attending summer camps or school, watching no television for a day, wearing a bike helmet, wearing a seatbelt, cutting out pop, gardening, eating 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables, games, and reading. Participants are encouraged to be creative and think of other healthy behaviors and activities to do.
Detailed contest information will be distributed to students in area schools prior to the end of the school year. Quin Community Health Services strongly encourages new participants to give the program a try. Former participants will be excited to learn that enhanced prizes are being offered this year. There will also be an improved prize selection for fourth through sixth grade students.
