From my front porch

Mavis Gonshorowski
To most people in the community he was known as “Mel”. To me, out of respect because he was a teacher, that of a science teacher during my high school years, he was “Mr. Wang”. Even in later years, to address him as Mel just didn’t seem right to me.
And that goes for other personnel who were on the school staff when we now “oldsters” were youngsters. To name a couple of them...Mr. Doran, our principal, will always be Mr. Doran, not Elmer; Mr. Branden will always be Mr. Branden, not LaMoyne.
Mr. Wang was one of my backyard neighbors here in town. The occasion never occurred of visiting over the “backyard fence” so to speak, but we never failed to greet each other in passing.
Of the times that he was perhaps out in his backyard, I wasn’t aware of it...unless he was mowing grass with his riding lawn mower. I can’t pinpoint the reason why, but I could tell by the sound of the mower that it was Mr. Wang’s. It had a sound all of its own, like perhaps a hole in the muffler. It was not a bothersome noise by any means...it was a “special” sound that I identified with Mr. Wang.
The Wang family, that of Mel and his late wife Martha, and their six children, were familiar faces around Greenbush as far back as I can remember.
Mr. Wang was called from our midst a couple of weeks ago. He will be greatly missed by the entire community. To have known him was a privilege.

Becky and I are delighted that Alicia Wicklund has joined us for another summer. Entering NDSU as a sophomore this fall, Alicia brings with her a lot of fresh new ideas. She makes a fine addition to the Tribune crew!

It doesn’t seem possible, but the Fourth of July is upon us once again. I just got my leftover fireworks from last year put away!
Seriously, about the only fireworks that go off at my place is when my lawn mower gets bucky...and we’re not going to go into that!
The big two-day celebration with the theme “Tickled Pink to Celebrate the 4th in Greenbush”, promises something for everyone, including food...no need to pack a pic-i-nic basket!
Fill the tank up with $gas$, load the family, buckle up, obey the speed limit, keep your eyes fixed on the road, and head on over to Greenbush. It’s the place to be on the 4th and 5th of July!! We’ll be lookin’ for yah!

The date was June 30, 1948. Sixty years have passed since the day Charmaine Modahl, daughter of Leonard and Christine, and Eldor Lorenson, son of Rasmus and Esther, were united in marriage.
Sixty years of togetherness hasn’t slowed them up much. Uncle Eldor and Aunt Charmaine continue to remain on the go, keeping up with the everyday activities in life, whether it’s work or leisure.
Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary to a very special couple!

This week’s giggle corner:
GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT GROWING OLD...
...Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
...Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get.
...When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do while you’re down there.
...You’re getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.
...It’s frustrating when you know all the answers but nobody bothers to ask you the questions.
...Time may be a great healer, but it’s a lousy beautician.
...Wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone.
THE FOUR STAGES IN LIFE...
1. You believe in Santa Claus.
2. You don’t believe in Santa Claus.
3. You are Santa Claus.
4. You look like Santa Claus.
