Julia Johnson
Julia Johnson passed away at LifeCare Greenbush Manor on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at the age of 105 years, 3 months, and 15 days.Julia was born on October 20, 1902 to Ole and Lena Langaas (Lauritzen) in Lind Township, Roseau County, near Greenbush on the farm that was homesteaded by her parents. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of rural Greenbush. She attended grade school in Dist. #33, Lind Township, and high school at both Roseau H.S. and Lincoln H.S., in Thief River Falls. She continued her education with Teachers Training in Thief River Falls, Bemidji State College, the University of North Dakota, and Mayville State College. Julia taught in rural schools for 26 years, mostly in Roseau and Marshall Counties. She was united in marriage to Julius Johnson on December 23, 1944 near Strathcona and the two made their home on their farm in Huntly Township. Julia continued to teach until 1949 when she retired and stayed home to help with the farm. Julius passed away on June 30, 1979 and Julia continued to make her home on the farm until 1981, when she moved into the Oak Terrace apartments in Greenbush. Julia entered the Greenbush Nursing Home in 1991, recently renamed LifeCare Greenbush Manor. Julia was a longtime member of Gustav Adolph Lutheran Church in Strathcona until moving to Greenbush where she has since been a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, teaching Bible studies, and also puzzles. She loved gardening, canning, freezing vegetables, and picking berries. She loved to make her Norwegian goodies, lefsa and potato dumplings.
Julia is survived by one sister-in-law, Alice Garrett of Caldwell, ID; 12 nieces: Lois Dvergsten and Adell Miller of Greenbush, Julie Treadway and Kathy Bennett of Sioux Narrows, Ont., Adeline Johnson of Kenora, Ont., Marjo Schrade of Flagstaff, AZ, Leona Good of Holt, MI, Lenay VanHorn of Superior, WI, Jeanne Collins of Karlstad, Diane Black of Brea, CA, Avis Anderson of St. Paul, MN, and Beverly Johnson of Comox, B.C., 11 nephews: Orleen Anderson, Curtiss Johnson, and Verne Nelson of Strathcona, MN, John and Wayne Johnson of Nestor Falls, Ont., Lester Johnson of Moorhead, MN, Roger Johnson of Rugby, ND, Bruce Johnson of TX, Dean Garrett of Tucson, AZ, Gerald Garrett of Yucca Valley, AZ, and Allen Anderson of Greenbush.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters: Eleanor (Halvor) Knutson, Laura (Martin) Anderson, and Mary (Torben) Johnson; and one nephew: Jerome Johnson.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 9, at Bethel Lutheran Church of Greenbush with Pastor Bryce Fellbaum officiating. Julia’s casketbearers were Roger and Curtiss Johnson, Verne Nelson, Mardy Anderson, Arlyn Dvergsten, and Al Schrade. All of Julia’s many friends and family were honorary casketbearers. Linda Sovde was the pianist, Jody Kirkeide, the vocalist. Interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Strathcona in the spring.
