George Wellen
George Menford Wellen passed away on March 21, 2008 at the MacIntosh Manor Nursing Home at the age of 91.George was born on August 23, 1916 in Badger, MN to Jalmer and Caroline (Olson) Wellen. He attended country school north of Badger. As a young man, he worked for several farmers in the area until he saved enough money to purchase his own land north of Badger. He also did carpentry work for area people. In 1945, he was united in marriage to Ethel Peterson of Ross, MN. In 1946, they moved to Roseau where he was employed by Land O’Lakes as a delivery milkman for several years. In 1948, they moved back to the farm. He enjoyed fishing, wood working and going to many auction sales.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ethel Wellen of Badger; sons, Gerald (Julie) of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Earl of Nome, Alaska, and Loren (Jeannie) of Badger; daughters, Barbara (Dan) Burkel of Greenbush, and Kathryn (Myles) Alberg of Thief River Falls. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Hukee of Badger, Thelma Rinde of Thief River Falls, and Luella Mohangen of Grafton, ND; sister-in-law, Janet Wellen, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jalmer and Caroline; brothers, Jessie, Lloyd, Kenneth, Roy, Arnold, Louis, and Harry; and brother-in-laws, Walter Hukee, Oscar Rinde and Helmer Mohagen.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 26th at the Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau. Interment will be at the Badger Creek Cemetery.
