Ruth Folland
Ruth Folland passed away at the Karlstad Healthcare Center in Karlstad on Monday evening, July 28, 2008, at the age of 87 years and 21 days.Ruth Adeline Folland, the daughter of the late Melvin and Agnes (Flaten) Holter, was born on July 7, 1921, in Solar Township of Roseau County, north of Greenbush, MN. She attended school and grew to womanhood there and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Pelan. At age 16, Ruth was accepted into the De Guiles School of Cosmetology in Minneapolis. She had a partnership in a beauty shop there until World War II. On June 28, 1942, Ruth was united in marriage to Austin Eddy. They had two daughters: Marilyn and Jeanne. On April 23, 1949, Ruth married John Folland at Hallock and they farmed in Norway and Pelan Townships near Halma. They had two sons: Michael and Jan. Ruth was employed as a designer seamstress for Arctic Cat in Karlstad. She began her floral career at The Willow and The Reed and, later, managed Mainstreet Floral for many years. Ruth was a member of Eidsvold Lutheran Church in Halma. She served as a deacon and held other positions over the years. Ruth taught Sunday School and also served as superintendent. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Lake Bronson. Ruth and her family were active in Kittson County 4-H for over 20 years and she attended conferences in Washington, D.C. Ruth had many artistic and creative talents: oil painting, quilting, sewing, knitting crafting, collecting “treasures” and her floral arrangements are well known throughout the area. For the past five years, she has battled cancer.
She is survived by two daughters: Marilyn Marvin, of Grand Forks, ND, and Jeanne (Dexter) Harvey, of Petersfield, Man., Canada; one son: Jan, of Watford City, ND; nine grandchildren: Jeremy, Kris, Brett, John, Siri, Erin and Krystle Folland, Kragh Olson, and Lowell Harvey; six great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law: Beverley (Dan) Heppner, of Karlstad; in addition to several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, one son: Michael in 2005, and four brothers and three sisters.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 1, at Eidsvold Lutheran Church in Halma. Pastor Gary Halverson was Officiant; Kirstin Olson, Organist; Dean Johnson, Soloist; Erin Folland, Violin Selection. Casket bearers were grandsons: Jeremy Folland, Kris Folland, Brett Folland, John Folland, Kragh Olson and Lowell Harvey. Sweet Heart Roses from Grandma’s Sweet Hearts: Siri Soltvedt, Erin Folland and Krystle Folland. Interment was at Eidsvold Church Cemetery, Halma.
Arrangements were with Collins Funeral Homes of Karlstad, Middle River and Greenbush.
