Gator girls wrap up 2007 volleyball season

Asst. Coach Sharon Schultz
After a disappointing end to the regular season – losing 0-3 to the Northern Freeze – BGMR’s volleyball team bounced back to defeat Stephen-Argyle Central in the first match of sub-section tournament play. The #6 seeded Gators easily won 25-14, 25-11, 25-11. Setter Vanessa Dvergsten directed offense with 20 assists for Jessica Dvergsten’s 11 kills and Anna Wicklund’s 8 kills. Wicklund also had 6 serve aces and 1 block. Jessica Dvergsten and Eiley Berg each had a block in Thursday’ night’s match.
Head Coach Stacy Dahl evaluated the win: “We did a great job passing the ball and setting up plays. At this stage of the season, we need to spice up our game and add variety to our offense, and we did a great job testing this in a game like situation against Stephen-Argyle. We need to continue to step up our game as the competition gets tougher during tournaments!”
BGMR lost their second sub-section tournament match Friday #3 seeded Climax-Fisher and ended the season with a 16-12 record.
JV finished regular season match play 8-6 and -- overall including tournaments – 11-12. The girls worked hard all season, and their persistence should carry over into winter and spring sports. C Team’s season record was 12-7; Green Team finished with 8 wins and 4 losses. Black team is the entry level, and some girls on the team had no previous volleyball experience. “Our middle school idea is that all beginning players get to participate and improve their skills in a game situation, and every player did improve,” said Black Team Coach JoLeah Hasson. “I encourage every player to attend volleyball camps in Badger, Greenbush, and even UND in the summer months. Purchasing a volleyball and having their hands on it throughout the winter and summer months will help them get on the teams they would like to be on. Managers are also a very important part of the volleyball team and some players will choose that route to go as they become older. The love of the game and the drive to become the best player you can be is what I encourage. Teams win, not players.”
With talent and depth at the 7th-JV levels, Gator volleyball can expect a successful 2008 season.
