BGMR Baseball Season off to a winning start
Coach Todd WensloffKCC/KCN 1 / BGMR 3
On a blustery afternoon in Kennedy, the Gators took on the Bearcats. With winds blowing in excess of 35 miles per hour straight in from left field, the offense for both teams was almost non-existent. The Gators did manage to push across two runs in the third inning on RBI hits by Tyler Aune and Dustin Lorenson. Those two runs proved to be enough for Gator pitcher Eli Jenson. Jenson pitched six very strong innings to get the win. He scattered two hit over those six innings to pick up the win. On a day where the wind was a factor offensively, it didn’t affect the defense at all as there were some very difficult fly balls that were handled masterfully by both teams. The play of the game was turned in the seventh. With the Bearcats posing a threat with two runners on, Brandon Peterson dove and knocked down a ground ball in the hole. He gathered the baseball and made a strong throw across the diamond to Tanner Pierce, who scooped the ball out of the dirt for the final out. The Gators evened there record at 1-1 and start a five game home stand on Thursday against the Northern Freeze.
Northern Freeze 3 / BGMR 11
The Gators began a five game home stand with a solid 11-3 victory over the Northern Freeze. Tyler Aune pitched the first six innings and scattered six hits to earn the victory. He received relief help from Dustin Lorenson, who pitched a scoreless seven innings. The two pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters, with Aune picking up 11 strikeouts in his six innings. The offense was led by Allan Dostal and Brandon Peterson who picked up two hits each including a home run by Dostal. But, the real story was the contribution up and down the lineup as eight different players scored runs in the contest. The third inning proved to be the big one as the Gators sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs. Defensively the team played a pretty clean game and limited the opportunities the Freeze had at having a big inning. Next action for the Gators is another key sub-section game on Saturday against Norman County
Norman County 2 / BGMR 12
On a beautiful spring Saturday, the Gators entertained Norman County. With absolutely perfect weather, the rescheduled game worked out perfectly as the sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky. The Gator bats came out equally warm as they put together ten hits in the contest. The Gators were led by Tyler Aune and Brandon Peterson with two hits apiece, including a big three run double by Aune and a solo homer by Peterson. Once again, the production came from the entire lineup as eight different Gators registered a hit and nine players scored a run. This contribution from the whole lineup made scoring runs and extended innings easier. All of this offense was welcomed by the pitchers. Dustin Lorenson and Jordan Holm did their part by limiting Norman County to four hits on the day. The Gators once again played stingy defense, as they didn’t commit an error in the game. The win moved BGMR’s record to 3-1 on the season. Next week is another big week for the Gators as they have three home games. All of the games are against sub section opponents.
Fertile/Beltrami 4 / BGMR 6
The Gators started off their week with a 6-4 win over the Falcons of Fertile-Beltrami. The game was somewhat in question due to steady rain throughout the day, but by game time the sun was shining. The Gator bats started off slow as they didn’t score until the fifth inning. In that inning, however, Jake Wiskow led off with a base hit and the next six batters scored to put the Gators in front for good. Eli Jenson cruised through the first six innings allowing only three baserunners. In the seventh he ran into a little trouble, but was able to wiggle his way out of the jam. The key defensive play coming on a beautiful, over the shoulder, foul ball catch by Brandon Peterson to end the game. The Gators ran their record to 4-1 with the win. Upcoming home action for BGMR is on April 22nd against Red Lake Falls and the 25th of April against Norman County East.
