Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal 0
The Gators kicked off the sub section playoffs with a solid 6-0 win over the Titans of Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal. The Gators had ended their regular season a week earlier with an 8-6 loss to the Titans, but this game was different as Gator starting pitcher Eli Jenson dominated from start to finish. Jenson wasn’t overpowering, but mixed his pitches well and never really let the hitters get comfortable. Jenson scattered four Titan hits in going the distance. Offensively, the Gators were led by Jordan Holm, Brandon Peterson, and Allan Dostal as they each collected two hits. The big inning for the Gators was the fifth. They entered the inning with a 2-0 lead, but hits by Peterson, Cody Langaas, Dustin Lorenson and a walk by Tyler Aune allowed the Gators to push across four runs in the inning. The Gators never looked back as they finished the game off with good defense and sound pitching, a key ingredient at playoff time. The win set up a rematch with the neighbors to the west, the Northern Freeze, in the sub-section semi finals.
BGMR 5 Northern Freeze 6
The Gators traveled to East Grand Forks to take on the Northern Freeze in the sub-section semi finals. The two teams split their regular season games during the season with the Gators winning at home and the Freeze winning on their home turf. So, the game was bound to be a battle. The Freeze opened the scoring in the first scoring an unearned run. Jordan Holm settled in after that and held the Freeze scoreless for the next three innings. The Gators evened the score in the fourth. Brandon Peterson got on with a single, and was driven home on a booming double to left field by Allan Dostal. Four innings was all the baseball to be played on this day. The rains pounded down, making the field unplayable. The game would be resumed on Friday in the fifth inning.
The destination on Friday was changed to Ada, as the field in EGF was still unplayable. The rains seemed to follow. About two hours before game time, the field in Ada received heavy rains putting the game in question for a second day. The grounds crew in Ada worked furiously to see that there would be baseball played that day. After about a two hour rain delay, the game resumed where it left off the previous day. The Gators struck first as they scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Tyler Aune opened with a bloop double. With two outs, Jordan Holm delivered a single which scored Aune, and Eli Jenson followed with a double to score Holm. The Gators tacked on two more in the sixth, as Dustin Lorenson delivered a line drive double to score two runs. With a four run lead, the Gators looked to shut the door. But, the Freeze had other plans. They scored three runs in the sixth to close the gap to 5-4. That set up the drama in the seventh. With two outs, Matt Borowicz delivered a single to score what would be the walk off winner.
It was a difficult ending to the season, but these players have nothing to hang their heads about. Unfortunately, the Gators say good bye to six seniors who have put in a lot of time and dedication to the program. Dustin Lorenson, Tanner Pierce, Tyler Aune, Jake Wiskow, Brandon Peterson, and Cody Langaas played their last game in a Gator uniform. They will be missed next year.
