John Wilebski
Small Frys 08’ North Star League Champs
The Greenbush 3rd and 4th graders repeat as overall North Star league champs, defeating Argyle 10-9 in a thriller to bring home the championship medals after defeating Stephen, Newfolden twice, Karlstad, and Hallock. The unbeaten Gators met unbeaten Argyle in the finals.
Skylar Forst and Benji Wilebski had an exceptional tourney with their key hits and big defensive plays in this eleven team round robin tournament.
Everybody contributed to the six win and zero loss effort. Hitting homeruns for the day were Nick Kaml, Joe Lorenson, Benji Wilebski, Skylar Forst, Joe Hlucny, Brady Kilen, and probably the biggest one that brought us back from behind was Trevor Robinson’s homerun.
Brady Kilen, Martyn Novacek, and Devin Pries did a great job defensively in the catcher/pitcher position, with Alex Truscinski, Dayton Bishop, and Joe Hlucny making nice catches in the field. Skylar Forst made a shoe string grab to hold on to a victory for the champs.
Pee Wee’s win North Half Championship
The Greenbush Pee Wee’s won the North Half Championship with a 3-2 win over Lancaster and a 2-0 shut out over top seeded Hallock.
Ben Langaas carried the boys with his pitching and a two run homerun in the championship game, but he did have some help. The play of the game was a bases loaded diving catch by center fielder Cody Kirkeide that shut down a Hallock Rally. Ben ended up striking out eight Hallock batters to preserve the win.
Wyatt Becker and John Wilebski III kept the middle infield in tact, and at the corners were Matt Howell and Brandon Waage to give solid defense.
Keaton Kjos also made a nice catch and Hunter Jacobson had the game winning hit in the semi-final victory vs. Lancaster.
Bryce Bergeron, Colton Penas, and Brandon Sorenson had nice games defensively. Bryce Bergeron, Alias Jacobson, Connor Graff, and John Langaas all had a great tourney hitting the ball. Owen Novacek and Brandon Pries did a good job at the pitcher position.
On Thursday, July 24, in Kennedy, the Pee Wee’s faced unbeaten Argyle in the overall world series. Argyle’s pitcher only gave up a hit to Zach Vacura and Matt Howell which ended the Pee Wee’s great season in a 4-0 loss to South Champ Argyle.
7-9th Grade Midgets take 2nd Place Honors
Placed in the second seed, the 7-9th grade midgets defeated Kennedy 4-1 and fell to League Champ Karlstad 7-1 to take second place honors.
Tyler Bentow tied the championship game after hitting a single, and by a sacrifice bunt by Issac Novacek. Then Brennan Kirkeide drove in with a clutching single for the lone Gator run.
This held on until the final innings, but a couple of detrimental walks and errors with timely hitting broke the game open for Karlstad. These boys played hard and never gave up until the last out. They definitely showed heart and class.
Trey Langaas, Ryan Bergeron, and Jordan Wahl did a nice job when they were in the field. Also, Trey Langaas, Nick Dostal, and Danny Waage had the hot bats for us.
A thanks to our 9th graders leaving our program, Brennan Kirkeide, Ryan Bergeron, Danny Waage, and Daniel Gryskiewicz. Great Season!
We had a great season of baseball. There is some very talented boys coming through in the upcoming years for the baseball program. Congratulations to a great season and a huge thank you to everyone for the support.
