Joel  J. Olson was born July 13, 1922, at the farm house of his parents Emil and Carolina (Hetteen) Olson, section 13, in Stafford Township, Roseau County. He attended country school through the 8th grade at Malung, and graduated from Roseau High School in 1942.

Joel was Baptized and Confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1950 by pasto Marxhausen.  His children, Wayne, Judy and Gail were baptized with him on that same day. He had a strong, unshakable faith.

He married Irene E. Olson (Knochenmus), April 11, 1945 at Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau. He farmed with his father and drove school bus for the Malung school district. He enjoyed going with his brother Lloyd on the Brandt-Olson Harvest Brigade to Texas. They would leave in June and return home in August. He made this trip several times.

In 1960, Joel trained for the position of office manager for the ASCS (FSA) Farm Program. He was manager of the ASCS office in Roseau from 1962 until retiring in 1989. Every farmer in Roseau County and beyond knew Joel as a good Public Relations person. Many stories were told at his retirement party.

He was a Building Committee Member when the new Messiah Church was built and he served on several other church committees through the years.  Joel was Chairman of the Board of the Roseau County Historical Society for over 25 years.  He was instrumental in raising funds for the Historical Society and Library building that were destroyed in the 2002 flood. He also co-chaired the Roseau County Heritage Book Committee with his wife Irene.  He was a member of the Lion’s club and served as president of the club two different times. He delivered meals on wheels in the Roseau area and coached the Malung Thursday night league hockey team in early years.

Joel loved spending time at the Morehouse Trail hunting camp with his sons, grandchildren and friends. He never shot a deer in his life but he loved hunting and cooking a big breakfast for the early riser hunters.

Joel Olson passed away on October 8, 2012 at LifeCare Roseau Manor.  He was 90 years old.
