Gordon Nelson, 96, of Lancaster, Minnesota passed away at Kittson
Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock, Minnesota on Thursday evening,
November 1, 2012.  Gordon was born in Minneapolis to John and Ellen
(Carlson) Nelson on June 20th, 1916.  In March of 1920 his family
moved to Lancaster.  Gordon attended school in Lancaster and played
basketball on the high school team.  He graduated in 1934.  After
finishing high school he and his brother, Donald, began farming in
Granville Township of Kittson County.  In 1943 he was united in
marriage to Marjorie Kain.  They opened “Gordon’s TV and Repair Shop
in Lancaster and in 1960 they purchased the Hardware Hank Store,
operating it until 1988.  In addition to farming Gordon also worked
at MCI in Pembina, retiring in 1988.  Gordon enjoyed farming and even
in retirement took an interest what was happening at the farm.    
Gordon and Marorie wintered in Texas until 1999 when they sold their
home there.  Gordon was a member of Sion Lutheran Church.  His
passion was Barbershop Music and in the early 60’s organized the
Kittson County Chapter of the SPEBSQSA.  His group was known as the
“Tranquilizers” and included Darrel Zimmerman, Doc Hoffman and John
Hoglin.
    Family members include his wife, Marjorie; a son, Todd (Cindy)
Nelson, Lancaster; five grandchildren, LaVonne Dvorak, Jeff, Dan,
Lance and Luke Nelson; 9 great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret
Auge, St. Paul; and nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by
a son, Kurt; a brother, Donald; a sister-in-law, Verne and a
brother-in-law, Ray.  
    Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, November 5, 2012 at 2:00
p.m. in Sion Lutheran Church, Lancaster.  Interment will be in
Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery, Lancaster.  Visitation will be
held at the Austin Funeral Chapel in Hallock on Sunday from 6 to 8
p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Kathy Levenhagen,
presiding; Kris and Don Thorlacius, duet; Jacki Przekwas, organist.
Casket bearers will be Dan Nelson, Jeff Nelson, Luke Nelson, Lance
Nelson, Judson Nelson and Pat Yutrzenka.
