Ruby Jeanette Holm was born on August 13, 1930 to Albert and Anna Besserud, the fourth of eight children. She attended school in Roseau and teacher’s training in Bemidji. Following the completion of her schooling she began teaching at the age of 18. Some of her students were only two years younger than she. Ruby taught at Haug-Leo, Grass Lake, Greenbush and Badger schools. During the late 60’s she was the Superintendent of Haug Leo while teaching the sixth through eighth grades.
On her 19th birthday, August 13, 1949 she married the love of her life, Clifford Holm. They had seven children, two girls and five boys including one set of twins.
In 1970 she and Clifford moved to Minneapolis where she taught English at the Medicine Lake Bible School. She also had other jobs at Pickwick, Target as head cashier, and then at the main downtown Minneapolis post office was the supervisor of the complaint department. They moved to Menahga, MN following their retirement. In 1998 they relocated to Roseau, MN and in June of 2010 Ruby moved to the Greenbush Nursing Home (LCGM).
Ruby enjoyed singing, golf, bowling, playing cards, camping and traveling. She was known for her quick wit, good sense of humor, cooking and baking, especially her homemade breads! She accepted Jesus as her Savior and her strong faith was evident in her life. She served in various capacities including: Sunday School teacher and superintendent, many offices in the local and district WMF and started a much needed Parkinson’s support group which encompassed several neighboring counties. Currently she was a member of Rose Free Lutheran Church.
Ruby was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the early 1980’s. She bravely fought the disease that ravaged her body until she passed away on October 25th, 2012, at the age of 82 years, 2 months, 12 days while living at the LifeCare Greenbush Manor.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Clifford Holm; children: Barbara (Martin) Johnson, Beverly Holm, Allan (Gwen) Holm, Corey Holm, Richard (Penny) Holm, and Robert (JoAnn) Holm; grandchildren: Martina (Blair) Johnson, Anna and Caleb Johnson, Jeremy Holm, Jason (Alayne) Holm, Melissa (Michael) Franson, Aaron (Sage) Holm, Andrea, Mikal, Jon, Anna, Amanda, Paula, Brittany, Daniel, and Adam Holm, Trisha and Joshua (Kristi) Holm, Nicole (Chad) Zimmer, Angie (Matt) Degerstrom, Chris and Bryan Holm, and John and Luke Holm; great grandchildren: Ethan, Amelia, Victoria, Jaron, Quinn, Aben, Andrew, Joseph, Caroline, Justice, Leah, Lydia, Thor, Abbagail, Gavin, Linda, Emilie, Jayson, Alexander, Adreana, Mikayla, Elias, Macy, Maija, Austin, Nathan, Joe, Lola; siblings: Adeline (Forrest) Swenson, Lewis (Arlene) Besserud, Ron (Carolyn) Besserud, Ardis (Don) MacLeod, sisters-in-law Mavis (John) Besserud and Avis (Glenn) Iverson, and brother-in-law Merton Kirkeide; several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Earl and John Besserud, sister Joan Besserud, sisters-in-law Carol Miller and Annette Kirkeide, son John Holm, grandson Craig Johnson, and great-grandson Joshua (Schilling) Holm.
Funeral Services for Ruby Jeanette Holm of Greenbush will be held on Monday, October 29 at the Rose Free Lutheran Church in rural Roseau at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-7 with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., and also one hour prior to the service on Monday.
