Shirley LaValla, 81

Shirley Margaret LaValla passed away on May 2, 2010 at the LakeWood Health Center in Baudette at the age of 81.
Shirley was born on September 20, 1928 in Oaks Township of Roseau County to Edna (Tolberg) and Guy Sutherland.  She grew up and attended school in Roosevelt, and later graduated from Williams High School in 1946.  She worked at Honeywell in the Twin Cities for a time and later moved back to Roosevelt in 1963.  She worked at the Cash Market with her brother, Robert.  She and Vernon LaValla were married on November 27, 1971.  She worked doing bookkeeping for Vernon’s Logging business; worked as a cook, at Marvin Windows and Doors, and most recently as a rural mail carrier.
She enjoyed picking blueberries, canning, gardening, watching the birds, going to the Casino and going on drives with Vernon.  She will be remembered for her kindness and care for others; and her sharp mind.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon LaValla of Williams; children, Jacquelyn Housker of Roseau, Sherry Thompson of Warroad, Lorrie O’Connell of Williams and LaVon McGuire of Baudette; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and brother, Robert (Edna) Sutherland of Roosevelt.  She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John; sister, Francis; and two infant siblings.
Private memorial services were held at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad, with interment at the Elkwood Cemetery.
