Vernon Paul James, 84
8/22/1925 – 5/9/2010
Vernon passed away, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He died under the loving care of his family in his home.
Vernon was born August 22, 1925, in Brush, Colorado, to Vernon Wiley and Elsie Merle James. They moved to Lake Of The Woods County in 1939.
Vernon attended school in Crookston for an agricultural degree. He enlisted in the army right after that. He was a paratrooper, in WWII, with the 11th Airborne Division, from 1944 to 1946. He made 1st Sergeant.
He married Julia Johnson on July 4, 1948, and they had six children.
Vernon wore many hats. He was a farmer (his favorite thing to do), a mechanic, he owned the Standard Oil Station, he drove school bus, became a school bus mechanic, second generation auctioneer, county commissioner, Chairman of the Board, and he retired from Transportation Supervisor. He was the commander of the VFW multiple times. He hauled cattle to the market, and he owns the portable toilet business with his son Doyle. He was a familiar voice at the Lake of the Woods county fair, calling the oval races and demolition derbies for many years along with his son, Doyle,
He was a member of the Coop, the VFW, the Legion (for 60 years), the Color Guard, the Northern Farmer’s Board of Williams, the Fair Board, board member of the Cenex, and a strong member of the community.
He loved to hunt, fish, go for scenic drives, work out in the fields and play cards. He was always working on something. He was a very social person. He loved visiting with company and he always had a story or joke for everyone.
He loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, his brother Don, and his brother in law Pat Ellis… He is survived by his wife Julia, sisters Betty Ellis – Hibbing, Patty Carlson (Clarence) – Hibbing, Virginia Pascoe (Chet) – Tucson, AZ., sister in laws Betty James and Mavis Johnson. His daughter Donna Serra (Mike), daughter Jo Mulholland (Brian), son Doyle James (Barb), daughter Paulette Daley (Don), daughter Sue Noble (Charles), and daughter Sandra Smith (Rob). Grandchildren Dennis Serra, Derek Serra, Dawn (Serra) Tatosian, Greg Newland, Doug Newland, Kristine Mulholland, Jessie (Miller) Jackson, Aaron James, Kari (James) Madoll, Corey James, Jamie James, John Daley, Brian Daley, Christopher Smith and Tina Smith. Great grandchildren Michael Serra, Alec Serra, Kody Parks, Noah Parks, Clover Tatosian, Willow Tatosian, Rebecca Newland, Brandon Newland, Riley Newland, Kelsey Miller, Adam Jackson, Emma-Jean Jackson, Autumn Daley and Brian Daley. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 14th at 1:00 PM at First Lutheran Church in Baudette. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-7 PM with a 6:30 prayer service at Helgeson Funeral Home in Baudette. Interment will be at the Elm Park Cemetery. Military rites by the Baudette Veterans Ceremonial Squad.
