Robert “Bob” L. Sutherland, 83

Robert “Bob” L. Sutherland passed away at his home in Roosevelt, MN on August 17, 2010 at the age of 83.
Bob was born on May 4, 1927 in Beaver Dam Township of Roseau County, Minnesota to Edna (Tolberg) and Guy Sutherland.  He attended the Bednar School, the Oaks Township School, the Hexum School and later to Williams for the 8th grade.  Bob joined the U.S. Army in January of 1944, serving until his honorable discharge in 1947.  He served in the Army Transport Unit in Guadalcanal, Guam, China, Philippines, Japan, Borneo and Australia.  Bob married Edna (Solien) on November 11, 1950 in Warroad, MN.  He moved to Oregon City, Oregon and worked at the Crown-Zellerbach Paper Mill.  They moved back to Roosevelt in 1955 and later opened the Williams Cash Market in 1957.  After 17 years in the business, he sold the market and farmed bluegrass, small grains and beef cattle.
Bob was very active in the community, including president of the WCCA for 10 years, hockey coach for peewee and bantam levels, chairman of the hockey boosters, on the NWCA board for 25 years, and County Commissioner for Lake of the Woods County for 22 years (including 8 as chairman), retiring in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of Roosevelt; daughter, Teresa (Roger) Knutson of Williams; son, Leslie Sutherland of Glennallen, Alaska; 5 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack; sisters, Shirley LaValla and Frances Langton.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 2nd at 2 PM at Bethany Lutheran Church in Williams, MN.  Interment will be at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Williams.
