Funeral services for Samuel Starren will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Rose Free Lutheran Church in rural Roseau. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau with a devotional service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at church.
Sam was born on July 16, 1916 in Jadis Township of Roseau County to Gelina (Hagen) and Anton Starren. Sam attended school until he was needed on the farm at home. He worked hard all of his life. He farmed grain, cattle and sheep and worked in the woods hauling and cutting pulp. He operated a Caterpillar doing ditching and clearing, and also worked at Polaris for 15 years.
Sam was married to married Elizabeth (Johnson) on October 12, 1937, and they had six children together. Elizabeth passed away in 1975. Sam then married BeauMondie Brazier on June 3, 1977 and they enjoyed 33 years of marriage together.
Sam loved to tell jokes. He had a good sense of humor. He deer hunted until 1970, enjoyed a little ice fishing. He liked dancing and music, especially to Polka and country music.
He was baptized and confirmed at the Rose Free Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member there.
Sam is survived by his wife BeauMondie of Badger; children, Darlene Bowden of Baker, Minnesota, Glenice Viken of Roseau, Lyle (Loralie) of Roseau, Dennis (friend Sharon) of Roseau, and Linnea (Tom) Horn of Houston, Texas; stepchildren, Vernon (Lynn) Brazier of Middle River, Curtis (Patty) Brazier of Ham Lake, Diane (Steven) Roseen of Roseau, Gloria (Todd) Stahlhut of McCordsville, Indiana, Brian (Shelly) Brazier of Coon Rapids, Paul (Anita) Brazier of Warren, Audry, (Bob) Kast of Andover, and Roger (Rachael) Brazier of Karlstad; grandchildren, June Haeske, Jeff Bowden, Cindy Picka, Susan Ibister, Gwen Stenvik, Teresa Grugal, Tim Viken, Ellen Brateng, Richard Starren, Ronald Castle, Raquel Zedlick, Lani Kruta, Brandi Foster, Tony Starren, Ashley and Aaron Horn, Kelsy Olson, Michael, Colleen and Rob Brazier, Jeremy, Joshua, Nathaniel, Luke, and Joseph Roseen, Shawn and Ryan Stahlhut, Amber and Alyssa Brazier, Cerena Jangula, Kayla Nowak, Andy Kast, Tynan Herrmann, Laurann and Roderic Hill, Kelsea and Preston Kittridge, and Reece Brazier; thirty-six great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren; brothers Anselm Starren and William (Inez) Starren of Roseau; sister Helga Amundson of Roseau; and daughter-in-law Beverly Starren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Gelina (Hagen); first wife Elizabeth; son Thomas; grandson Michael Starren; sisters, Martha Colden, Gina Norquist, Alice Fjeld, and Edla Marcoulier; and brothers Edwin and Ingvald Starren.
