Hal was born December 3, 1939 in Minneapolis Minnesota to Marvin and Helen (Wester) Magnuson. He attended school in Bloomington until entering the U.S. Navy. He always said he served in the Navy’s Kiddie Tour, which was “in by 17 and out by 21”. Following his time in the military he worked for several years for a chain of drug stores in management and development in the twin cities area. During that time in his life he also obtained his Private Pilots License along with his Instrument and Sea Plane rating. He took great pride in flying, and kept his license current as long as he was able. Being driven by his entrepreneurial spirit, Hal started several business ventures prior to moving “north” and opening the Ranch House in Walker. Following his desire to be near “big water” he also began buying and developing property in Baudette and eventually “retired” there but continued working on his final project which was designing and seeing his dream home be completed.
Hal was a people person, and motivated by developing business success in others, and sharing his knowledge and wisdom through his advice and generosity. He was extraordinarily intelligent and creative and always said that a day was wasted if you didn’t learn something new. Boating and fishing were also a large part of his life which prompted him to obtain his Captains license. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, and just being outdoors. Hal will be remembered as an exceptional man who was unashamed to speak his mind but the first to give anyone his famous bear hug. He was proud of his business sense and vision, and according to Hal the tavern was his favorite office, and the place he most enjoyed sharing his ideas with others. His presence will be missed greatly by his family and all who called him friend.
Hal is survived by his wife Chris, two sons; Curt Magnuson, Kevin (Heidi) Magnuson, stepchildren; Patricia Hoehn, Carolyn (Richard) Zakrzewski, Margaret (Paul) Howard, grandchildren; Tara, Rachel, Kyle, Mikayla, five step grandchildren, two brothers; Rick Magnuson, Stan Magnuson, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and nephew Greg.
