Hanlon Olson, age 86

Hanlon Olson, age 86, of Baudette, MN died January 18, 2011 at LakeWood Care Center in Baudette, MN.

 

Hanlon was born in Spooner, MN to Nels and Christine (Lundmark) Olson on November 23, 1924. Hanlon attended grade school in Rapid River until moving to Baudette in the 8th grade were he finished school through his junior year.

 

He and Marie (Marchuk) were married on June 16, 1947 in Baudette by Father Merth at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

 

Hanlon was a County Commissioner for 14 years. He started M&H Motel, the first motel in Baudette, owned the Redi Mix Plant in town, worked as a Mail Carrier, was a motor pool mechanic in the Navy, owned his own Trucking Company, and had his private pilots license and delivered mail by plane to the NW Angle. He also worked at the missile sites in ND.   Hanlon helped pour the concrete for the arena, donating much of his time and materials. 

 

Hanlon had many hobbies including fishing, hunting moose, and wolves by plane in Canada. He enjoyed hunting deer and Partridge, camping with his family and friends, woodworking, and making fishing tackle and bird houses.  He took his family on a week-long Pontoon trips to Mile’s Bay camping for many years. Hanlon donated children’s clothing to the kids Mission School in Ignace, Ontario and delivered them there often.

 

He was a member of the Baudette American Legion and VFW, and also the Moose Lodge in Baudette.

 

He was preceded in death by his Parents; his sister Norma; brothers, Melvin and Leon; and great-grandson Carter Michael.

 

Survivors include his devoted wife of 63 years, Marie; children Steve (Jan) Olson of Baudette, Robert (Gret) Olson of Copper Center, Alaska, Cathy (Ron) Norquist of Baudette; sister, Julia Richardson of Anchorage, Alaska; brother, Vernon (Lenore) Olson of Baudette; granddaughters, Cara (Scott) Lanz, Jill (Jared) Martinson, Michelle (Justin) Hudson, Cindy (Matt) Beshaw; grandsons, David Norquist, Derek (Jill) Olson, Jason (Alisa) Olson, Brent (Lisa) Olson, Ryan Norquist; and twelve great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Alyssa, Carly, Eddy, Nolan, Chloe, Abby, Thaddeaus, Weston, Shawn, Nicholas, and Gabe.

 

A Memorial Service for Hanlon Olson will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Lakeroad Chapel in Baudette, MN.  A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the Memorial Service.
