Vernon Johnson, 89

Vernon Johnson was called home by his Lord and Savior on January 30, 2011 – 3 days short of his 90th birthday – at the Karlstad Health Care Center. Vernon was born Feb 2, 1921 in Jupiter Township, Lake Bronson, the son of Conrad and Albertina (Brodin) Johnson.  He graduated from the Enok Country School and later earned his GED.  In November of 1946 he married Muriel Andersen and took over the family farm.  In addition to farming, he raised cattle and chickens, and sold eggs to many of their neighbors.  Vernon “wore many hats” over the years: farm insurance agent and secretary of the Hallock Farmer’s Mutual Fire Insurance, township assessor and lay minister for various area churches.  In addition he generously gave his time as a board member for the Karlstad Memorial Hospital, the Karlstad Nursing Home, Winnipeg Bible College, the Jupiter Community Cemetery, was one of the original members of the Red River Valley Baptist Bible Camp Board, and Vice Chairman and Deacon of the Board at the Karlstad Baptist Church, which he joined in 1934. Vernon was instrumental in the fundraising efforts for the new building.
Those who knew him will remember him as a historian of our area.  Every farmstead, clump of trees once a farmstead, old building and the like held a readily told story complete with names and dates.  Vernon could remember the first joke he ever heard and loved to keep in contact with people.
Vernon is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Muriel; one son Dwight (Joanne) Johnson, of Langley, B.C., Canada; one daughter Shirley (Gerald) Carlson, of Kennedy, MN;  two grandchildren: Tenaya Johnson and Andrew (Natasha) Johnson;  two great-grandchildren: Lincoln and Dayton Johnson;  one brother: Arlen (Marge) Johnson, of Bloomington, MN; two sisters: Adeline Lundquist, of Crystal, MN, and Jeanette Clark, of Raleigh, NC;  in addition to several nieces, nephews and other relatives.  Vernon is preceded in death by his parents.
