Melinda Hellekson, 69

Melinda Hellekson, 69, of East Grand Forks, MN passed away on Saturday, March 05, 2011 at her home under Hospice care, with her family by her side.

Melinda was born to Donald Lum and Blanche Donaldson Lum in Breckenridge, MN, on April 20, 1941.  She graduated from Wahpeton High School and the University of North Dakota.  She was a teacher.  Melinda and Spencer Hellekson were married in Grand Forks, ND on August 14, 1964.  They lived in several cities while raising their family. 

Melinda spent summers with her extended family and many friends on Otter Tail Lake, MN.  She loved sailing, swimming, games, cards, crossword puzzles, music, travel and any opportunity to learn something new and have fun.  Melinda was active in P.E.O. (Chapter AY, ND), Delta Delta Delta Sorority, EGF Arts & Crafts Council, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Eastern Star ND Chapter #3, several bridge groups, a birthday club, and a special coffee group.

Melinda was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Marion (Dr. Richard) Leigh, and Merna (Ray) Brown. 

Melinda is survived by her husband Spencer Hellekson; children Sarah Hellekson (Bob Gustafson), Ed (Melanie), Eric (Jennifer), and Ben (Crystal); grandchildren Hannah, Ethan, Lily, Dane, and Audrey; and many more close family and friends.   

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.  The family extends grateful appreciation to Dr. Bill Mann, our family doctor for over 30 years, for his compassion, dedication and friendship.  The family also extends a special thanks to the staff and volunteers of Hospice, Gift of Life House, St. Mary’s Hospital and the Mayo Clinic for their compassionate care and hospitality.

 

Memorial Service:  11:00 AM Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1515 5th Ave., East Grand Forks, MN

 

Visitation: at the church during the hour preceding the service.
