Isabelle R. Szemes, age 94, of Michigan City, died Wednesday, March 16 at the Arbors.
The service will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Isabelle Rose was born February 25, 1917 in Halma, MN to Louis H. and Julia (Ligaard) Spilde, both of whom preceded her in death. Isabelle was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the Eidsvold Lutheran Church at Halma. She moved to Chicago in 1942 after the start of WWII. There she met and married Joseph S. Szemes on Oct. 6, 1945. They had four children, Michael, twins Gerald and John, and Rebecca. They came to Indiana in 1953. Joseph passed away in 1985.
Survivors include her sons Michael and John Szemes and daughter Rebecca Szemes, all of Chesterton; grandchildren Michelle Szemes-Davis, Jason (Tara) Szemes, Eric Burton and Amanda Burton. She was preceded in death by her son Gerald Szemes, and siblings Joe, Maynard, Glen, and Jay Spilde, and Gloria Holm.
Isabelle was a homemaker. She was an avid Chicago sports fan, except for the Sox. She loved to watch high stakes poker games. She enjoyed sewing, reading, solving crossword puzzles, gardening, and truly loved to watch all of her vegetables and plants grow.
