A funeral service for Edna Kloempken, 94, of Roseau will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at the Roseau Community Church in Roseau at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Edna Loretta Elizabeth Gustafson was born in Svea Township of Kittson County to Sara Kristine (Petterson) and Peter Gustafson. She was the youngest of five children and grew up on a farm near Warren, MN, and attended country school. Edna graduated from Warren High School in 1935, attended Bethel College for one year and then graduated from Miller Vocational School of Practical Nursing in 1940. Prior to her marriage, Edna was a private duty nurse in Minneapolis.
Edna was united in marriage to Harold Kloempken on May 25, 1946, in Minneapolis. They lived in Minneapolis and Hutchinson before moving to Karlstad in 1949, where she and Harold operated the Kloempken Funeral Home. Harold was a licensed mortician at the time. Edna worked at the hospital in Karlstad for a short period of time and helped Harold, as needed, with the funeral home. During this time they raised four children. The family lived in Karlstad until moving to Roseau in 1967, when Harold took a job as the administrator of the Roseau and Warroad hospitals and nursing homes. Edna continued her vocation as a homemaker and loving and devoted wife and mother. When her youngest children were in high school, she worked in the activities department at Sheltering Oaks Manor. Edna and Harold moved to the Oak Crest Assisted Living facility in Roseau in 2006, and, in 2009, Edna moved to Wannaska to live in respite care with Bonita and James Riveness.
Edna enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening, and making dried flower arrangements. She was a wonderful mother, grandma, and great-grandma and will always be remembered for her delicious chocolate chip cookies. Her family was her life priority and she enjoyed the years of fun times with her family.
She is survived by her husband Harold of Roseau; children, Glen (Kristine) of Roseau, Carol (Charley) Klotz of Roseau, Jan (Mark) Bierschbach of Milbank, SD, and Sandy (Mitch) Chrzanowski of Roseau; grandchildren, Elisa (Joe) Schmitz, Jeff (Rachel) Bierschbach, Sara (Mike) Adelman, Jake Chrzanowski (fiancé Cassi), Kara (Dan) Schletty, Paul Kloempken, Danny Chrzanowski, and Sally Kloempken; great-grandchildren, Elly, Blake and Drew Schmitz, Tenley Adelman, and Sydney Bierschbach; nephews, Roscoe Herseth and Dr. Ralph (Kathy) Herseth; nieces, Lynn (Jeff) Colyer, and Jayne (Terry) Coffing; sister-in-law Betty (Wayne) Fadden; and special friends Jim and Bonita Riveness.
