Christine “Dolly” Flaten, 87

  Christine “Dolly” Flaten, (Mrs. Reuben Flaten), 87, of Duluth, MN, formerly of Greenbush, MN died on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN.
       Christine “Dolly” Flaten, was born Christine Olga Gjovik, the daughter of Olaf & Inga (Hamness) Gjovik, on February 20, 1924 in Roseau County, rural Strathcona, Minnesota.  She attended rural school through the 8th Grade. She and her sister Mae spent time working in a factory in Chicago and also worked for another sister in East Grand Forks.
      At the age of 20, she married Reuben Flaten on July 15, 1944.  They farmed together for many years, but in 1953 Reuben started a new career in road construction. The family spent the summer months together in a trailer house while Reuben worked on different job sites throughout the country.  Dolly also worked for 12-13 years at Arctic in Thief River Falls, MN before she retired.
      She is survived by her son—Lon & wife Marie Flaten of Hermantown, MN and daughter—Rhonda and husband Rick Hamre of Fargo, ND.
    6 grandchildren–Sonja (Scott) Williamson, Shannon (Rob) Ackerman, Joshua (Karmen) Hamre, Timothy Hamre, Kate Flaten and Abby Flaten;
    9  great-grandchildren–Brett, Bryce and Zachary Williamson; Ben , Joe, Sam and MollyAnn Ackerman; twins Sophie and Sydney Hamre.
    2 Brothers–Olaf Jr. “Butch” Gjovik  & Lee (Stevie) Gjovik; and many nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben in 2009; her parents: Olaf and Inga Gjovik; siblings Bernice Driscoll, Roy Gjovik, Ivan Gjovik, Kelly Gjovik, Nora Flaten, Nan Johnson, Mae Paulson and Roland Gjovik.
     Dolly loved to sew, knit, crochet and garden. The last years she had to deal with significant vision loss due to macular degeneration. She then spent much time listening to audio books and visiting with her many friends at Primrose Retirement Center in Duluth. One of her greatest joys was hearing about all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She prayed for them regularly. She rejoiced when they succeeded in their many endeavors. She was a loving and supportive mother and grandmother.
     Dolly loved her Lord and Savior, her husband Reuben and her family. She will be greatly missed.
     Funeral Service was held on Saturday, July 24, 2011 in Bethel Lutheran Church of Greenbush with Pastor Mark Mathews, officiating.  Special music was provided by Lynda Blake, vocalist with Scott Williamson at the piano. Casket Bearers were Abby & Kate Flaten, Joshua & Tomothy Hamre and Sonja & Scott Williamson. Burial was next to Reuben in Poplar Grove Cemetery, rural Strathcona, MN with Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush in charge of arrangements.
