Florence “Marion” Torgeson was born on February 20, 1916 in Oakley, MN. Shortly thereafter, she moved with her family to the Spooner area of Lake of the Woods County and settled along the banks of the Baudette River several miles south of Baudette. She attended the Boone school through ninth grade.
As a young woman, Marion worked in Baudette in a laundry service. She married Ernest “Bud” Levasseur on February 2, 1938, and together they settled in Carp, MN amongst many friends and family members. Together, they supported themselves and their two sons, Gerald and Jim, from the land which they farmed and in the house they built together.
From sunrise to sunset Marion worked hard along-side Bud taking care of the animals she loved so dearly, picking berries and canning vegetables from her bountiful garden, pitching hay bales for the winter, housekeeping and raising her sons. Marion’s hospitality was known by many neighbors and friends. Despite the demanding work, Marion always had a pot of hot coffee and a smile for the many friends and neighbors who opened the screen door looking for a dozen of her farm fresh eggs to take home and a nice visit. She would not let anyone leave without serving them “lunch”. Over the years, she and Bud opened their home to many family members needing a place to winter or stay during difficult times. She loved to pass the time over a game of wist or pool hall rummy.
Marion lived on her farm for 64 years doing all the things she loved most. She moved to Baudette and stayed in the care of Lakewood Care Center the last few years of her life, bringing many smiles to the residents and staff there.
On August 18, 2011 Marion passed away in her sleep while in the care of Lakewood Hospital. She is preceded in death by her parents Simon and Margaret Torgeson, her brothers, Sherman, Clarence, Orville and Arthur, and by her husband, Bud Levasseur. She is survived by her sons Gerald (Carol DeLeo) and Jim (Natalie Stapak), and by her grandchildren Sheri (Doug Huber) and Brad (Katie Thompson). Great-grandchildren include Sheri’s daughters Mara, Zoe, and Odessa Huber and Brad’s daughters Sierrah and Savannah Levasseur.
