Mass of Christian Burial for LeRoy LaValla of Williams will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Williams at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be on Wednesday at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Baudette from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer vigil service at 7:00 p.m. and also one hour prior to the Mass on Thursday.
LeRoy Gordon LaValla was born on August 5, 1931 to Ray and Ellen (McGuire) LaValla in Warroad, MN. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1952 and was discharged in 1954 after serving in the Korean Conflict.
LeRoy married JoAnne (Dickerson) on June 29, 1957. He worked at Henrickson Equipment in International Falls, MN for 25 years. Following his employment there, he helped keep local trucks and loggers on the road with his mechanical abilities. In 1983, JoAnne and LeRoy moved to the LaValla homestead in Williams, MN where they resided and LeRoy was self-employed.
LeRoy’s hobbies included camping, hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He loved hockey and coached two Old Timer teams for some time, and helped in the community in various events.
LeRoy LaValla passed away from complications of severe burns on Friday, December 23 at the Miller Dwan Hospital in Duluth. He was 80 years old.
He is survived by his wife JoAnne of Williams; children, Shelly (Daniel) Barker, James (Jacquie) LaValla, and Cindy (Steve) Skogstad; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; siblings, Alvin (Jenny) LaValla, Alfred (Flo) LaValla, Loretta (Henry) Voll, Vernon LaValla, Kathryn Baie, Carol (John) Norquist, and Lloyd LaValla; and one sister-in-law, Hazel LaValla.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ellen and Ray LaValla; brothers, Basil and Marvin LaValla, and sister, Evelyn Pederson.
