John Sang, 63

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that John Sang age 63, of Grand Forks, ND passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at his home, after recently being diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer.

John E. Sang was born on September 14, 1948 in Warren, MN the son of Edwin and Adaline (Haupt) Sang.  John grew up on a farm west of Karlstad, MN.  He learned at an early age the value of hard work and the importance of family while developing a strong connection with nature and God.  John attended the Thief River Falls Vocation Technical Collage with a degree in carpentry.  In 1968 he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country with a tour of duty in Vietnam until 1970.

On December 12, 1970 he was united in marriage to Joyce Peterson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN.  John worked construction in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks for numerous Construction Companies.  In 1972 he began employment at the Grand Forks Air Force Base in the Civil Service Engineering Department before retiring in 2002.  As John would proclaim after retirement: “I work in between fishing and hunting trips.”  John was very active in Pheasant Forever and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundations.

“Big John” will be remembered by his immense inner and outer strength, his hearty laugh, his “Sangisms” and his heart of gold.
