Harvey Glen Battles, 81

A funeral service for Harvey Glen Battles of Roosevelt will be held on Tuesday, March 27 at the Roosevelt American Legion Hall at 2:00 p.m.  Visitation will be on Monday at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Warroad from 5-7 p.m. with a devotional service at 7:00 p.m.

Harvey was born on September 13, 1930 in Roosevelt, MN to Mary (Fish) and Arthur Battles.  He attended the Hexum school one mile from his house, and later attended school in Williams.

Harvey lived within a mile of his birthplace his whole life.  He worked in North and South Dakota as a farm hand in his younger years and was fourteen years old when he moved out there to work first time.  He also drove truck in the twin cities for a short time and in the woods logging, loading eight foot logs onto Railcars by hand.

 On March 31, 1953 Harvey married Irene Pederson.  They lived in Roosevelt and raised dairy and beef cattle for over forty years.  He also worked at Marvin Windows and Doors for a couple of years.

 Harvey was a jack of all trades.  He could do carpentry and electrical and often helped neighbors and friend with his talents.  He was also a tremendous mechanic.  In the early 60’s Harvey was in a band with Bob Palm.  He played the guitar and the violin.  He enjoyed sailing on Lake of the Woods and built his own sailboat in the 70”s.  He enjoyed bow hunting for deer, and winter and summer fishing.  Harvey was a religious man and believed in God and Heaven.

Harvey Battles passed away on March 21, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.  He was 81 years old.

Harvey is survived by his wife Irene; three children: Kenneth, Rod (Janet), and Keith (Kaylyn) Battles, all of Roosevelt; grandchildren: Rachel Pearce, Lacey Battles, Nicole Gravelle, Melanie Hites, Jamie Battles, Ryan, Dale, Jeremy, John, and Daniel Battles, and Derrick McFarlane; five great-grandchildren; numerous step-great-grandchildren; siblings: Laurence (Betty) of Roosevelt, Howard (Cathy) of Portland, Oregon, David (Norma) of Oregon City, Oregon, Daisy Bjork of International Falls, MN, Aleta Battles of Bemidji, and Mary (Ray) Friesner of Roosevelt.  Harvey also has Charlie Foster who is not his biological son, but Harvey condidered him a son.

Harvey is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Arthur Battles, sister Vangie, brother Thayer, and grandson, Austin.
