Clifford Torkelson, 89

Clifford Torkelson, the son of the late Gunval and Julia (Bjorlokken)
Torkelson, was born on March 5, 1923 in Nelson Park Township,
Marshall County, near Karlstad, MN.  He attended a rural school near
his home and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at
Hegland Lutheran Church of rural Kaarlstad where he was a lifelong,
dedicated member. Following school Clifford stayed on the home farm
to help his parents and eventually took over the farm in the mid
50’s.  While working his farm, Clifford also worked at Polaris
Industries in Roseau for many years.  In 2005 Clifford sold his farm
to Gerald and Jeanette Vigstal and moved into an apartment in
Karlstad.  He enjoyed driving back out to the farm on an almost daily
basis.  Clifford has resided at the Karlstad Health Care Center since
June 1st where he passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at the age
of 89 years, 4 months, and 1day.
Clifford was a life long member of Hegland Lutheran Church where he
rang the church bell every Sunday morning before church    services
and sometimes even at 6 AM just for a wake up call.  He tended to all
the duties in the church as a general caretaker of the church and the
grounds for many, many years until his health failed.  He really
enjoyed the potluck meals served by the Hegland ladies aide and also
enjoyed traveling to other socials to spend time with his many
friends.  He also enjoyed going to the restaurant in Karlstad almost
every morning for breakfast so he could catch up on the latest news
and would also like to drive his little red car to Strathcona for
lunch.  He loved to go for drives in the country to see how the area
crops were progressing and to look for wildlife.  Clifford loved his
brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and their families.  He was
always interested to where they were living and what they were doing
and would always have a big smile on his face when they would bring
the young children over to see him.
Left to mourn Clifford are 3 sisters: Lu (Harlan) Darkenwald of Long
Prairie, MN, Lorraine (Bill) Costello of Brookings, SD, and Evelyn
Warnes of Morris, MN; Gerald Vigstol, who has made his home with the
Torkelsons since his early youth; 3 sisters: in addition to many
nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Harold, Glenn and
one in infancy; 3 sisters Alice Hodne, Eunice Torkelson, and Audrey
McKnight.
Funeral Services were held at 10:00AM, Saturday, July 7, 2012 at
Hegland Lutheran Church of rural Karlstad with Pastor Phil Rokke
