Virgil DR Gunnarson, 79

Virgil DR Gunnarson, 79, Hawley, MN, died Wednesday, August 29 at Villa Maria in Fargo, ND.  A celebration of Virgil’s life will take place at 2:00 PM Monday, September 10 at the Merchantile Building on Steamer Hill on the Steam Threshers Reunion grounds at Rollag, MN, Reverend Tom Olson, officiating.  Military Rites will be provided by the Lake Region Veterans Honor Guard.  Interment will be in the Dale Cemetery, Dale, Minnesota.  Virgil enjoyed the music of the Steam Threshers Reunion and those people with instruments are invited to join the Rollag Junction Bunch to provide music for the service.
 
Friends may call 1:00 – 3:00 PM with a prayer service at 2:30 PM Sunday, September 9 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.  The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the service at the Mercantile Building in Rollag. People are encouraged to be casual and wear their “Rollag Attire” especially their hats.
 
Virgil DR Gunnarson was born July 8, 1933 in Juniper (Jupiter) Township in rural Kennedy, MN to Robert and Ellen (Bjornberg) Gunnarson.  He was raised and educated in Kennedy, MN and served with the U. S. Army 1954 – 1956.  Virgil was united in marriage to Inadel Anderson November 9, 1956 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rochester, Michigan.  They resided in Hopkins, MN and later in New Brighton, MN where Virgil operated a truck washing business.  It was in the Twin Cities that he also started his insurance and estate planning career.  They moved to Lake Park, MN in 1969 where he sold insurance for a number of companies and did estate planning.  They moved to Grand Forks, ND in 1980 and, in 1983, returned to the Lake Park-Hawley area. Inadel died in February, 2012.
 
Virgil treasured time with his grandchildren.  He also enjoyed doing estate planning for his clients, gardening, playing the guitar, being the voice of the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion for the past 28 years and sponsoring Bob Becker’s Old Time Music Program.  He was also a believer in the value of education and, at his request; his body has been donated to the North Dakota School of Medicine in Grand Forks.
 
Virgil is survived by his four children; Darrell (Kim) of Hawley, Minnesota, Daniel of Reno, Nevada, Jai of Fargo, North Dakota and Brenda Gunnarson of Hawley, Minnesota. Four Grandchildren, One brother; Glenn of Kennedy, Minnesota, One sister; “Judy” Krabbenhoft of  Blackduck, Minnesota.
 
He is preceded in death by his wife, Inadel, brother Peter Lloyd, sisters Bernice and Marjorie “Marty” Vik, niece; Karen Vik, nephew; Wayne Vik, sister-in-law Conny Gunnarson and brother-in-law, Alvik.
