Stuart Ellis Spilde, the son of the late Jay and Leatrice (Oien) Spilde, was born on August 27, 1952, at Greenbush, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school and grew to manhood in the Karlstad community. “Toot”, as he was known to his friends, graduated from Karlstad High School in 1970. He was employed in construction in Florida and the Twin Cities for several years prior to returning home to Karlstad. He worked at Polaris Industries in Roseau and for various area farmers over the years. In 1999, he moved to Crookston where he worked at the New Flyer bus plant for 8 years and at American Crystal Sugar for 5 years. “Toot” enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and keeping up with all sports, especially the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Gophers. He also enjoyed music, cooking, photography and spending time with family and friends. He had been in failing health for the past 6 months and passed away with his family at his side at the Karlstad Memorial Nursing Center in Karlstad on Friday evening, September 7, 2012, at the age of 60 years and 10 days.
He is survived by one brother: Craig (Judi), Spilde of Karlstad; one sister: Taryn Landowski, of Drayton, North Dakota; nieces and nephews: Corey (Shanon) Spilde and their children: Caden and Reagan, all of Wheaton, Minnesota; Liz (Spilde) and husband, Mike Rowe and their daughters: Avery and Ainsley, all of St. Cloud, Minnesota; Jessi Saylor and her son, Evan, of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Kayla Saylor, of Wahpeton, North Dakota; and Becka Landowski, of Portland, Oregon; in addition to several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives as well as a host of friends.
Stuart was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law: Tom Landowski in 2010.
Stuart had a generous heart and a warm smile and will be deeply missed.
