Wally Davis, 79

Wallace Eugene Davis was born March 16, 1933 in Holloway, MN, the son of Fred and Lina (Lowry) Davis.  He grew up in Holloway where he graduated from high school.  He enjoyed school sports.  During his childhood days he worked a lot at the family restaurant.
After high school Wally enlisted in the Air Force.  He was stationed in Maine, Greenland, Canada and numerous other places. On December 29, 1956 Wally was united in marriage, in Brandon, MN  to Kathy Esala. This year they celebrated together 56 years of marriage. In 1957, Wally was discharged and the couple moved to Hutchinson, MN where they had their first child.  In 1958, Wally was baptized and confirmed in Hutchinson at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
In 1961, the couple moved to Baudette, where Wally took a job as a civilian at the Baudette Air Force base. His position was an operator in the power plant.  He had three more children during that time.   When the Air Force Base closed in 1979, Wally went full time with his digging business. He retired in 1995.  When deer hunting started, the backhoe shut down and it didn’t start again till spring.
Wally was a very active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church for 52 years. In addition he was a member of the American Legion for the same amount of time. For many years Wally was on an Air Force bowling league and one in town. He was a family man and centered his activities and time around that.  Family games were popular with Dad.  He was an outdoorsman, a hunter, a fisherman and a trapper.  In later years he spent many hours fixing and enjoying the family cabin.  At the age of 62 he took up golfing and traveling.  He became an accomplished golfer and was able to make several winter trips to Arizona (fresh-squeezed oranges off the tree) and one to Alaska.  In Alaska he got in on a rafting trip with his youngest son. Wally was a simple man who always had a grin and really enjoyed humor and found it wherever he was. This got him in trouble when he was enlisted as he ended up doing extra duties because he couldn’t “hold back” the laughter at times.
On Monday night, January 7, 2013 Wally died at the age of 79.  His father, Fred, mother, Lina, two brothers Kenny and Willard and two sisters Irene and Ruth preceded him in death. Wally is survived by his wife Kathy, sons Gary and wife Carol, Keith and wife Becky, Ron, daughter Kay and husband Forrest, six grandchildren,  Miranda and husband Luke, Jennifer, Daryl, Dylan, Ryan, Morgan, two great grandchildren, Keean, Jace, one sister, Mabel Emde of Minneapolis, one sister-in-law, Elaine Davis of Alexandria, and several nieces and nephews.
