Della Harriet (Sather) Snustead, 80

Della Harriet (Sather) Snustead of Roseau & Williams, MN passed in to God’s hands on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Lifecare Manor in Roseau, MN at the age of 80, surrounded by her loving family.
Della, the daughter of Emil and Emily (Haug) Sather, was born December 20, 1932 in Greenbush, MN and was baptized at Bethania Lutheran Church  in 1933.
Della spent her youth growing up on the family farm in Skagen Township and graduated from Greenbush High School in 1950.
On November 17, 1951 she married Donald Swen Mattson, also from Greenbush.  She followed Donald to Fargo while he attended North Dakota State Ag College (now known as NDSU), living in the married housing quarters until his graduation.  After graduation, the pair returned to Roseau to start their new life, with Donald working at Fikkan Pharmacy and Della managing the homefront, taking care of their first-born, Debbra.
In 1968, Della and Donald opened Matts on Pharmacy adjacent to the Hartz grocery store in downtown Roseau. Here, Della worked hard at balancing raising her family while also managing the business.  All told, Della and Don had five children – Debbra, Drew, Dean, and twins Brett and Bradd.
Donald’s health started to decline in the early 70’s with Della having to spend more and more time at the pharmacy to keep their dream alive.  Donald passed in September of 1976. At a time when many woman were either stay-at-home mothers or took a non-active role in business, Della grabbed the reigns, actually grew the business, while at the same time raising her five children all by herself, a tremendous feat for its time.
On January 20, 1979, Della married Erwin (Erv) Snustead, a relief pharmacist that had worked at the pharmacy periodically after Donald’s passing.
In the Spring of 1984, Della and Erv purchased the Greenbush Pharmacy from Mr. and Mrs. Bob Novotny with Erv and daughter Debbra working as the pharmacists.
In December of 2003, Della and Erv sold Mattson Pharmacy and Greenbush Pharmacy to son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Judy Mattson, who still operate the pharmacies today.
After the sale of the pharmacies, Della and Erv retired to their lake home at Sandy Shores, located on Lake of the Woods, where she loved to relax, read, landscape and plant flowers.  But her greatest joy was spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren. In her earlier years, Della was active in Garden Club, Dance Club, Bridge Club, taught a drapery-making class for a number of years and always enjoyed and excelled at making anything that involved crafts. Della was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
After Erv’s passing in September of 2009, Della continued to reside at Sandy Shores until her recent passing.
She is survived by her children Debbra Mattson of Roseau, daughter-in-law Debra (Sarah (Tim) & Shelby) from Eagan, MN, Dean Mattson (Judy, Alicia & Erik) of Roseau, Brett Mattson (Jane, Anders & Helena) of Roseau, and Bradd Mattson (Sherry, Alec & Jakob) of Crystal, MN and great-granddaughter, Sedona Scovell.  She was preceded in death by her eldest son Drew, second husband Erwin, brother Curt, and first husband Donald.
Funeral services were held at Messiah Lutheran Church, Roseau on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Michael Beery officiating.  Internment will be at Hope Cemetery in Roseau in the Mattson family plot.  Visitation is Friday, March 1, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau.  Helgeson Funeral Homes is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association.
