Kenny Byfuglien, 81

A celebration of life in honor of Kenny Byfuglien of Roseau will be held on Monday, March 4, at the Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau at 11:00 a.m.  Visitation will be on Sunday at Helgeson Funeral Chapel from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Kenneth Glen Byfuglien was born on January 25, 1932 in Ross, MN to Gunda (Dokken) and Knut Byfuglien.  He was raised on the farm and attended school in Ross and in Crookston, MN.

On December 27, 1952 Kenny married Crystal Brandt in Ely, MN.  They lived in Ross where they farmed and raised their family of nine children.  They moved to their present location in 1976, west of Roseau about five miles.

Kenny’s father used to haul cattle and Kenny would often assist him with it.  He became more interested in trucking and in 1954 started his own trucking company, known as Byfuglien Trucking, still in operation today. He was involved in the business for over fifty years.

Kenny loved his children and grandchildren tremendously.  He enjoyed family gatherings, talking to family and friends on the phone, and would often joke if he hadn’t heard from one of them that they can call him collect if their phones didn’t work.  This was after he had tried to call them and they didn’t answer.  He enjoyed watching hockey on TV and staying connected with all of his grandchildren’s activities and events.

Kenny loved horses and buggies.  He traveled to Culbertson, Montana to take part in a wagon train a couple times, bringing along some of his kids and grandkids.  He very much enjoyed the Roseau County Fair.  He brought many animals to the fair and was often seen in the parades on his horses and wagons.  In recent years you could find Kenny riding his golf cart around the yard, the fairgrounds, and even a short trip on the gravel roads near home to visit his grandkids.

Kenny Byfuglien passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 26.  He was 81 years old.

He is survived by his wife Crystal of Roseau; children, Dana (Marianne) Byfuglien of Roseau, Susan (Randy) Kvien of Roseau, Valerie Sherman (Scott) of Roseau, Dean Byfuglien (Nicole) of Roseau, Cheryl Byfuglien (Dale) of Roseau, Krisann (Dale) Thortsen of Baudette, Jeremy (Penny) Byfuglien of Roseau; 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; brother Bob (Vangie) Byfuglien of Roseau; sister Vivian Turner of Anaheim, CA, and nieces, nephews and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gunda and Knut, daughter Jana Hodgson, son Don Byfuglien, son-in-law Doyle Hammer, brother-in-law Clyde Turner, and an infant sister.
