Willard Kaml, 76

A Memorial Service for Willard Kaml of Trapper Creek, Alaska and formerly of the Badger/Greenbush area will be held on Saturday, March 9th at 2:00 PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service at Helgeson Funeral Home. Interment will be at Barnett National Cemetery in Badger, MN.

Willard Andrew Kaml, the son of Steven and Helen (Gust) Kaml was born on June 3, 1937 in Greenbush, MN. He attended a country school near his home in rural Greenbush and finished school in Greenbush MN.

On June 20th 1958 Willard was united in marriage to Margaret A. Klamar at the United Lutheran Church of Gatzke, MN. They had 5 children during their time together. They lived in several places until settling in the Badger area where they had a dairy farm until Margaret’s Death on Aug 30th 1972.  Willard then Married Virginia Alten on Feb. 21st 1975 bringing 3 more children into the family.  They lived in both MN and AK.

Willard broke his leg as a teen. He was unable to do much else so he taught himself to play the fiddle. He enjoyed playing his fiddle, and being outdoors. After Margaret passed away he often played his fiddle for his kids. He eventually got them to chord for him on the piano. He loved to go out with his metal detector, taking all of the kids with him, to dig for treasure. In the spring they enjoyed mushroom picking, in the summer it was time for berry picking and fishing. In the fall they picked hazelnuts, and harvested crops.  Willard passed on some of these passions to his children and grandchildren. He also passed on his love for gardening, hunting, and adventure to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He ran his own saw mill, built log cabins, and also tried his hand at many other trades such as trapping, carpentry, shearing sheep, and much more. Willard could fix just about anything with a piece of wire or rope. If someone needed help he would drop what he was doing to help them out.

I met Willard through Tony Galzerano. We used to go 4 wheeling, hiking, hunting and camping in Trapper Creek. Willard used to come by and play his Fiddle for us at the campsite. I even recorded his playing for a few minutes. Miss you, Willard!
