Lewis Dean Stromberg, 81

Lewis Dean Stromberg passed away peacefully at his home in Kennedy on
Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the age of 81 years.  Lewis was born on
January 28, 1932 in New Rockford, North Dakota to David and Lura
(Whitman) Stromberg and was baptized into the Christian church.  He
grew up in Hope, North Dakota where he graduated from high school in
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and spent much of his four years
of service aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific.  On August 24,
1951 he was united in marriage to Marjorie Walz.  After his honorable
discharge from the Navy he attended Valley City State Teachers
College where he obtained his degree in Business Education.
In 1960 Lewis and Marge moved to Kennedy where Lewis served as a
teacher and a coach for 31 years until his retirement in 1991.  As a
teacher he was known for setting high standards and as a coach he was
known as a determined competitor. In his spare time Lewis was also a
long time employee of Petersburg Chevrolet in Kennedy.  As a long
time resident of Kennedy he appreciated his loyal small town friends
and his friendly and caring neighbors.
Sports played an important part of the life of Lewis.  He was a
starting guard on the Hope High School State Championship team of
1950, played college baseball at  VCSU, amateur baseball with his
brothers in Hope at a young age and continued to play as a catcher
for the Kennedy Chiefs until 1970.  Lewis loved to play any game with
a scoreboard and a bet on the side, whether it was bowling, pool,
cribbage fantasy football, or darts. But his favorite sport was golf
where he won a number of league championships and ‘shortstop’
tournaments besides holing three ‘aces’ on the scorecard.  Anyone
having the privilege of golfing with Lewis will remember his straight
drives down the fairway, his putts to win the “skins”, his impatient
racehorse style, and his witty and colorful verbiage on the course.
