Johanes “Johnnie” Rud, the thirteenth child of Norwegian immigrants Christ and Janna (Ruud) Rud, was born on May 22, 1918, in East Park Township of Marshall Co., near Strandquist, MN., where he attended school and grew to manhood. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On August 30, 1940, Johnnie was united in marriage to Nina Taylor in Newfolden, MN., and to this union seven children were born: Sharon, Mervyn, Janice, Linda, Delbert, Nyla and Wayne. Johnnie was employed at the Kiene Farms, Kennedy, MN, and had a business in Strathcona in the 1950’s. He spent some time in the Chicago area and upon returning, did cement work in the area. He enjoyed cards, woodcutting, tinkering, hunting and building bird houses. He loved to dance and reminiscing about his trip to Norway. Since Dec. of 2006, Johnnie has resided at the Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park, MN., where he passed away on Sat. afternoon, March 23, 2013, at the age of 94 years, 10 months and 1 day.
He is survived by six children: Sharon (Ralph) Kalinowski, of Karlstad, MN., Mervyn (Georgia) Rud, East Grand Forks, MN., Janice Baker, of Lake Park, Linda Odum, of Lincoln, NB, and Delbert (Jill) Rud and Wayne Rud, both of Tucson AZ; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Nyla Gunstinson and her husband, Tom, all his siblings: Inga, Andrine, Christine, Carl, Anne, Jennie, Alma, Claus, Carla, Andrew, Calmer and Engvald, and their spouses, grandson: Joseph, two great-grandchildren, two sons-in-law: Gordon Morud and George Baker, and long-time special friend: Margaret Ellefson.
