Roy Joseph Hlucny, 76

Roy Joseph Hlucny was born on June 17, 1936 in Barnett Township, near Greenbush to Godfred and Helen (Gust) Hlucny.  He was  baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Benwood and attended Klitzen country school (District 88) until the 8th grade and later attended Badger High School.  Following his graduation from high school he was drafted into the Army and served for 2 years before being honorably discharged in 1960.  He then went on to work construction in North and South Dakota, building steel buildings, housing at the Grand Forks Air Force base, laying pipe in Grand Forks, and working on Minuteman missile sites. He then returned to the Greenbush community where he worked at Polaris Industries as a welder for a number of years while he built up his farm and his herd.  An avid outdoorsman, he spent time hunting and fishing. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.  He was a Jack of all trades, but most of all he loved farming, checking his cattle and crops on his “Big Red” 3 wheeler.
            He was united in marriage to Helen Walsh on September 14, 1963 and the two have since made their home and farmed in BarnettTownship.  Roy was also a great caregiver to his parents while living on the farm.  Roy passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at AltruHospital in Grand Forks, ND at the age of 76 years and 10 months. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and a past board   member of the Farmers CO-OP Ag Service.
            Roy is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Helen of Greenbush, 1 daughter Teresa (Brian) Weleski of Lancaster, Mn,; 4 sons: Doug (Teresa) of Greenbush, Jerry (Kelly) of Fisher, MN, Paul (Shelly) of Wannaska , MN., and Cris (Anastasia) Hlucny of Whitewood, SD; 14 grandchildren: Erin (Nathan) Shaw of Hawley, MN., Jason of Whitewood, SD, Barry, Tressa, and April Weleski of Lancaster, Steven, Joseph, Robert, and Ryan Hlucny of Greenbush, Ella and Gavyn Hlucny of Fisher, Paul Jr. of  Whitewood SD, Layne Hlucny of Wannaska and Mary Helen Hlucny of Whitewood, SD.; 2 sisters: Agilda (George) Zwack of Owatanna and Lillian Woinarowicz of Sulfur Springs, TX.; along with many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother in law Edward Woinarowicz.
            Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30AM, Monday, April 22, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Badger with Fr. John Kleinwachter presiding.  Music for the Mass was provided by Roy’s Grandchildren, Steven, Joseph, and Robert Hlucny, who were accompanied by Jeanne Novacek as the Organist.  Mass Servers were Roy’s grandchildren, Ryan Hlucny, Tressa and April Weleski, and Eucharistic Ministers were Phyllis Walsh, Delores Walsh, and Charlie Walsh.  Brian Weleski and Frank Dostal were Readers and Roy’s sister Agilda Zwack, along with her husband George, were Gift Bearers.  Casket Bearers were Roy’s grandchildren: Jason and Barry, Weleski, Steven, Joseph, PJ, and Layne Hlucny.  Honorary Bearers were the Knights of Columbus and the Greenbush American Legion Post #88.
            Visitation was held after 5:00PM, Sunday, at the church, with a Prayer Service at 7:00PM, and the Rosary followed led by the Knights of Columbus.  Visitation was also held one hour prior to services at the church.
            Interment services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Badger following services.
            Military honors were accorded by the Greenbush American Legion Post #88.
