Rose Ursula Vidas, 96

Rose Ursula Vidas, of Baudette, Minn., passed away January 22, 2013,
at the age of 96. She was born December 3rd, 1916, in Hibbing, the
daughter of Anton and Ursula Valen. Rose attended Hibbing High
School and upon graduation, received her beautician’s license. Rose
married John Butcher of Hibbing, MN where she and John lived with
daughter Patricia. Following the death of her husband John, Rose and
Patricia continued to reside in Hibbing where Rose worked at the
Hibbing General Hospital as a Surgical Technician. She met Philip Vidas
upon introduction by Phil’s sister Frances, who was teaching in the
Iron Range area. Phil and Rose married and continued to live in
Hibbing, with their daughters Patty and Mary, until the family moved
to San Diego in the late 50’s.
Together, Phil and Rose built several homes and were known for their creative teamwork, Phil for his building, and Rose for her interior decorating. In the 70’s, the couple returned to Hibbing, and eventually moved to Phil’s family homestead which they remodeled and enjoyed hosting family, neighbors, and friends for meals and gatherings. In later years, Rose and Phil moved to Parker’s Arc and then to Lakewood Care Center.
A parishioner of Sacred Heart Church (Baudette), Rose was also a founding member of the Lake of the
Wood’s Food Shelf, where she served as Director for many years. Her handiwork could be seen in the
myriad of floral arrangements she created for services, weddings and seasonal celebrations at Sacred
Heart Church (Baudette), and also Blessed Sacrament Parish (Hibbing, MN) and St. Michael’s Church
(San Diego, CA). Rose was recognized by the Diocese(s) of Crookston and San Diego for her service as a
CCD Instructor and retreat leader.
An avid gardener, Rose’s green thumb was evident in the beautiful gardens tended at her home, the
blue ribbons she won, and awarded others as Judge at the Lake of the Wood County Fair, and her
membership in the North Star Garden Club.
A loving Wife and Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Sister, Godmother, Aunt, and Friend
to many who knew her, Rose lived a life of grace and service to her family and community. Rose’s family
is grateful for the kind and loving care she, and her family received at Lakewood Care Center, as well as,
visits from neighbors and friends. Rose will be dearly missed by her family and all who loved her.
She is survived by daughter, Mary Vidas (Jane) of Lino Lakes, MN., granddaughter Susan Jacobs (Jerry)
and great-grandchildren, Amanda, Jessica, and Jake of Moorpark, CA, sister-n-law Eva Young (Chula
Vista, CA)and many loving nieces and nephews.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband Phil Vidas; daughter Patricia (Ralph) Dickey; sister-n-law
Frances Green ; her sisters Mary Starck, Antoinette Passeri, Ann Barich, and Frances Carmody and
brother, Michael Valen.
Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, June 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Baudette).
Lunch will be served following the service with Internment at Oak Park Cemetery.
