Stella O. Bitzer passed away on July 27, 2013 at the LakeWood Care Center at the age of 98. Stella was born on October 18, 1914 in Thief River Falls, MN to Emma (Lee) and Halvor Halvorson. At the age of 16, she graduated from Lincoln High School and later attended Teacher’s School in Grand Forks. She met Alfred “Bud” Bitzer in Thief River Falls when he was milking cows, and were married on December 19, 1937 in her parents’ family home. She taught rural country school for two years, having students the same age as herself. The lived in Williams, MN and had 8 children. In November of 1956, they moved to St. Louis Park, MN where Bud worked at Honeywell; then had their 9th child. After Bud’s retirement in 1977, they moved back to Williams full time and wintering in Ajo, AZ for 25 years.
Stella raised her children at home, worked at Precision Ind. and later at Texatonka Nursing Home while in the cities. She was involved with the Sunshine Club and the Ladies Aide in MN and AZ; active in Mothers and Daughters and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She loved fishing (both ice and boat), watching the bird feeders, canoeing, campfires, reading, knitting, needlework, picking berries, dancing, playing cards and other games.
She is survived by her children, Rolan (Gloria) of Big Fork, MN, Charlotte TeHennepe of Leonard, MN, Bruce (Sheila) of Shakopee, MN, Hal of Williams, Lee of Amherst, VA, Keith (Robin) of Baudette and Colleen (John Jr.) Stanton of Williams; 26 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Bernice Saupe of Anchorage, AK and Harold Halvorson of Thief River Falls, MN; sister-in-law, Thelma Halvorson; son-in-laws, Alonzo Welch and Wayne Young.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bud in 2011; daughters, Marcia and Sharyn; siblings, Helen, Rebecca, Lester, Dagney, William, Morris, William and Phyllis; and son-in-law, Dale.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 3rd at 11 AM at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Williams. Visitation will be on Friday from 6-8 PM with an 8:00 prayer service at Helgeson Funeral Home in Baudette. Interment at the Hillside-Zippel Cemetery.
