Carole Ramona Nelson, 85

Carole Ramona Nelson, age 85, of East Grand Forks, MN entered into eternal life on Friday, November 29th, 2013 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND surrounded by her family.

            Carole Mellom was born on August 17, 1928 in Northgate, Saskatchewan, Canada the daughter of Ralph and Clara (Jensen) Mellom.  Carole was baptized and confirmed at Kopperud Lutheran Church in Northgate.  She graduated from Northgate High School in 1945.  She attended the Deaconess School of Nursing graduating in 1948.  She worked as a surgical nurse at Trinity and St. Joseph Hospitals in Minot, ND, as well as Los Angeles County Hospital, CA.  In 1952, she was united in marriage to William Nelson, Jr. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot, ND.  They were blessed with six children.  Carole lived her married life on the family farm northeast of East Grand Forks.  Carole’s greatest gift to her children was instilling Christian values and the importance of a strong work ethic.  She took great pride in her large vegetable garden and beautiful flowers, especially her dahlias. In her “spare” time she enjoyed needlework (tatting and hardanger). Many were recipients of her baked goods, homemade pickles…and especially her lefse. In 1980, Carole completed an RN refresher course and worked at Altru Hospital until retiring in 1990.  Following her retirement, she and Bill traveled throughout the US and Europe.  Carole was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Deaconess Nurse’s Alumni and Eastern Star.

            Loving family members who survive Carole include her husband, William “Billy” of East Grand Forks; children, Dawn Fowler of Maple Grove, MN; Charmaine (Mike) Munt of Alexandria, MN; Robert “Bob” Nelson of East Grand Forks; Brian (Michelle) Nelson of East Grand Forks; and Bruce (Kari) Nelson of East Grand Forks; daughter-in-law, Beth Nelson of East Grand Forks; one sister, Lois Miller of Oxbow, Saskatchewan, Canada; one brother, Ralph Mellom of Greenville, SC; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild along with many nieces and nephews.

            Carole is preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Clara Mellom; son, Bradley Nelson; sister, Marilyn Crane; brothers, Laverne and Howard.

Memorials may be given to Altru Cancer Center or the East Grand Forks Heritage Village.

Memorial Service: 10:30 AM on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1515 5th Ave. NW, East Grand Forks, MN.

 

Visitation:  5:00 to 7:00 with a 6:30 PM Prayer Service on Monday, December 2, 2013 in Dahl Funeral Home, 2029 Central Ave. NW, East Grand Forks, MN and also one hour prior Memorial Service on Tuesday in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
